have a question for all of you.... what benefits does a firewall exactly give you besides impede internet performance and convience.

false sense of security and inablility to learn proper security methods :D

"OMG! SOMEBODY TRIED TO PING ME! GOOD THING ZONEALARM SAVED ME FROM THIS EVIL HACKER!"

common!

if you patch up your system and disable unneeded services your as good as firewalled.

like i said, i dont need the firewall, i just want Zonelabs to release the Ad-blocker built into ZA Pro seperately, its so good

You would want a firewall to keep tabs on some services. I need shares for school but not home, but I only connect to one subnet ... limiting the chance of damage through the share vern ... limiting which ip i connect to.

Has anyone gotten a firewall to work right with Longhorn 3683? I got sygate to work, but it sucks, doesn't give you total stealth. I use Kerio on Xp and have perfect stealth. Athough I configured it that way....

I use Kerio PF, it works well on XP and Me. I don't like paying for firewalls or much of anything. I have tried sysgate recently, it works in Longhorn XP, and it did not sleath everything. I removed it. Kerio did not install properly. ZA just sucked. I got a copy of Norton 2003 and it seems to work good. I like the Ad blocking. I am still evaluating it however. But I would say Kerio or Norton PF.

Personally, I much prefer a Linux solution to the firewall. Assuming, you have a spare computer, You don't need a router - just 2 nics - and you can use it as a router and a firewall. Most of the firewall apps out there only let you block/accept applications and show annoying pop-ups telling you some one is hacking your computer which makes many paranoid. There's Mandrake firewall, Free Sco (which runs from one floppy disk), IP Cop, PicoBSD, and a whole bunch more. Most are pretty reliable, FreeSco is probably the most tested and I trust them more than BlackIce or Norton or ZoneAlarm. And they're free!!!

I much prefer using No-Ads for blocking pop-ups instead since the block-list is a plain text file which is easily backed up.

i use ZoneAlarm Plus mostly, but i used agnitum outpost for a while and that was great too. outpost supported plugins too, so you can write your own plugins for it :)
