fletcher
hi, i'm using vista and i'm experiencing some slowdowns and even crashes. i'm guessing it's got something to do with high cpu usage and memory... i've included some pics about this i searched around the forum but couldn't find any answers. i already tried disabling windows update, but everything's the same and i don't know what to do. Slimy
The svchost.exe processes are responsible, just like in XP, for running services. If you want to slim it down, see here: https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=513758 In your case though, I would look into cutting it down to one sidebar, they seem to be hogging 15% of your CPU just by themselves (unless that was just at the instant of the screenshot). fletcher
tks for the reply, Slimy! unfortunately it didn't work out: i pretty much disabled all the processes u recommended or said were safe to disable but now svchost is even higher!! and as u see in the pic, i have many svchost processes! as if it weren't enough one of them eating up 120MB... is this normal?? mrastudent
Having lots of svchosts is perfectly normal. If you want to see which service or services that particular instance of svchost includes, right click on it and choose "Go to Service(s)". Then you'll know which service is doing the memory hogging. It's probably Superfetch. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/529134-svchost-taking-up-tons-of-memory/#findComment-588218439 Share on other sites
DKAngel
ram is there to be used so stop freaking out geezus its how its ment to work vista will free it up if u need it elase where live with it accept and move with the times more efficent to use it than not or there would be no point in having it Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/529134-svchost-taking-up-tons-of-memory/#findComment-588218444 Share on other sites
fletcher
@mrastudent yes, superfetch is included in the list of services used by the memory consuming svchost. but then what's superfetch? essential to windows or smthing? @DKAngel i wouldn't really "freak out" if i could sense some fluidity in my system. not being to able to play a simple arkanoid-like game 12mb-sized as fluid as possible (like i did in xp and in the first week or so of vista) is what's really bugging me. i don't see vista freeing it up when i need it elsewhere... CPressland
LOLOL at Fletcher! ok grab yourself a g15 keyboard (so you can see memory and CPU useage in realtime), use vista for a bit and notice that it normaly uses 40% on a 2GB system and 60-65% on a 1GB system, now open a game, what number does it go down to??? 3% Windows Vista pages the entire OS into the page file before opening a game or very very large application (like looking at a solor system in autocad) if SVCHost.exe is useing lots of memory dont worry about it! it's just giving your RAM a good work out and making the most out of your PC Personaly i'd always recomend having 2GB on vista but hey! dont worry about it fletcher! trust me, Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/529134-svchost-taking-up-tons-of-memory/#findComment-588218509 Share on other sites

CPressland
insignificance? i dont understand? dude, seriously. your PC is fine! :p leave it alone and pretend it's not there! in a week or so! boom it'll be gone, Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/529134-svchost-taking-up-tons-of-memory/#findComment-588218551 Share on other sites
Brandon Live Veteran Posted January 12, 2007 Veteran Share Posted January 12, 2007 That number actually looks pretty large for svchost memory usage. If you right-click on it in Task Manager and click "Go To Service(s)" - which services are highlighted? PricklyPoo
The fact that you have Avg Antivirus, Utorrent, Ati Control Center, Object Dock and other things running in the background is probably adding to the computer slowdown :p Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/529134-svchost-taking-up-tons-of-memory/#findComment-588220817 Share on other sites
azz0r_wugg
Yeah Vista is a huge ram hog, but from my experience is scales and handles it quite well. For example my old laptop had a gig of ram but always seemed to handle Vista ok and had about 300mb ram use. My new laptop is a 2gb beast and Vista uses about 580 - 720 of ram. Thats with just Firefox, Messenger and WLMd running. Its annoying really but its the price you pay for a graphically sound and feature packed OS. MistaJista
I've had a similar problem with a couple of XP machines. In both of those cases it was down to Microsoft Update being installed as opposed to the default Windows Update. Removing Microsoft Update fixed the problem. I believe there is even a pre SP3 hotfix that attempts to address the issue (didn't work for me though). I realize you are talking Vista here but I know Microsoft Update is available for that too and wonder if the same problem may have carried across... Curious to know, should you find the root of this. dagamer34
For the 1000th time, having "free" RAM is NEVER good with the system Windows 2000/XP/Vista use. They dump a bunch of system files into RAM at boot and then moves them to the page file when an application asks for space. Having "free" RAM is a fallacy. Unless you have 2GB+, in which case, you want everything in RAM anyway, RAM should always be in use. The only real complaints one can have is when a service disproportionately using a certain amount of RAM when other memory-intensive programs are running. The fact of the matter is that most people will rarely, if ever, run more than one memory intensive application at once. So unless you are taking screenshots of you doing major photo-editing in Photoshop at the same time encoding a video or something, those numbers don't really matter. Suppose those services weren't take up that "excessive" amount of RAM you're talking about. Unless there's another program you're running that would immediately benefit from that memory, it's not worth it. Just my 2 cents. :D EDIT: Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, because if I am, I wanna go get myself a RAM stick. :p Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/529134-svchost-taking-up-tons-of-memory/#findComment-588221383 Share on other sites
