eth3l Posted December 3, 2002 Share Posted December 3, 2002 Here is an interesting Cable Modem Challenge . . . I recenlty switched from DSL to Cable Modem. I ran a network through my Switch: D-Link DSS 5+. After getting the cable modem I was unable to connect to the network or the internet through the switch: the main PC was fine, but my client Laptop would not connect. I can connect the laptop directly, but when it is connected to the switch, it will not connect. All network settings look good . . . Well here is the challenge: On my laptop, connected to the switch, if I run the network set up wizard, an "Internet Gateway" Group appears in my "Network Connections" window. the interesting thing is that the gateway is not for a computer connected to my system! The gateway changes when I connect at different times. -see the image- This computer is unknown to me, and like I siad it changes each time I run the network connection wizard. I called Charter and they were clueless. In any event I am curious as to why this happens, and a way to get my network set up.\\ thanks Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
intensityx Posted December 3, 2002 Share Posted December 3, 2002 Normally you are only given one IP with your broadband service unless you pay for more...if you are just plugging your cable modem into the switch and then plugging your systems int to the switch, you are essentially trying to pull two IPs. That may be what your problem is...to fix this you can either get another IP from your provider or you can be more secure and set your self up a router or at the very least use ICS/NAT to share the connection. I called Charter, and there should be no problem using the switch - it just shares the bandwith of the main IP address. I also only had i Ip with DSL, and there were no issues. I wonder, though, why I see an internet gateway for another computer and user all together my connetion is set up thusly: cable to modem to switch to clients. I tried ICS. . . NAS? intensityx Posted December 3, 2002 Share Posted December 3, 2002 I can't speak for charter reps, but that is an incorrect way to setup multiple clients on one IP. You need to have a router, even if it is a router/switch combo. You computers will then have Internal addresses such a 192.168.x.x. and you will have one NIC that will have your single external IP address. Note: You need at least three network adapters for this to work with two computers and one of yur computers will have to act as the router with ICS or some other routing software... unless your switch has a builtin router. thuggers Posted December 3, 2002 Share Posted December 3, 2002 because your DSL provider probbably provided more tha one ip, in which case your switch would work. Windows XP has the power to detect ROUTERS, SWITCHES and HUBS. For Example, I have an Internet Gateway on my PC, on all pc's hooked up via my Router, Which has a 4 Port Switch. i don't know what the "Challenge" is here, if you're conserned why its there, its because of the switch. Melven Posted December 4, 2002 Share Posted December 4, 2002 I agree with intensityx and thuggers.it doesnt work because of the 1 IP u are given for the cable modem and there is nothing to the routing.you need a router unless u set up 1 pc to do the routing job.
