Shadrack
So I get a spam email and it looks like it has a legitamit unsubscribe link at the bottom. I follow it and type in my spamed email address (I have a seperate one for garbage collecting) and then I get this message: Unsubscribe from Mailing listYour email address has been unsubscribed. Please note that it may take from 14 to 30 days for the removal to take place. ???????? frusterating. decided to share my frustrations with you. thingsforjason
and that so called "unsubscribe" function was probably just for them to verify that yours is a legit address...be prepared for an increase in spam to that account. :ninja:
EmuZombie Veteran Posted December 3, 2002 Veteran Share Posted December 3, 2002 well... i hate to tell you this... but... you may have just put your email on more lists... as a general rule, dont ever use un-subscribe links/email addresses unless it's a list you did sign up for that you no long want to be on. Why? Simple. They use that to confirm your email address is valid and put you on more lists because you've been "comfirmed"
sphere
yep thingsforjason is right. now you've just showed them that the email address is an active one. so now you will most likely get more spam
Groovedude
yeah u should never click them links they normally just pass ur e-mail address onto about 100000000000 other Spam companys to send u more e-mails :( hehe.. i know it sucks :p.. g33kb0y
Ya...I just got some more spam today from a junk mailer I "unsubscribed" from over three weeks ago. great. speaking of which...why the hell do they say "unsubscribe?" 99.9% of the time you didn't SUBSCRIBE in the first place...they added you to their list, basically, without you knowing. usually...subscription is something that is done knowingly (unless it's a gift, of course) :D
Shadrack
yeah, i know about how "unsubscribing" to things usually ends up in more spam mail. But this email address is just an alias that is off of my domain, (so I can just start pointing it to no where and problem solved). What gets to me though, is how I can receive emails that don't even have my email address in the To: field. How do those find their way to my in-box? JK1150
Hahah on AOL, it is like (say ur name is screenname) sent to: scrnname, screnname, screenname, screenname01, screenname002 and random things like that. I HATE SPAMMERS!
OPaul
Try this program out http://www.mailwasher.net/ It will bounce emails back to the sender making them think your email address doesn't exist.
thingsforjason
What gets to me though, is how I can receive emails that don't even have my email address in the To: field. How do those find their way to my in-box? the bcc (blind carbon copy) field. that's what mailing lists like to use...i use it so that i can send out an email to a bunch of people without all of those people seeing each other's email addresses. i just send it to myself and bcc to everyone else. :)

oldmate15
speaking of which...why the hell do they say "unsubscribe?" 99.9% of the time you didn't SUBSCRIBE in the first place. ;) that is so true, im at the stage of receiving 30-80 junk e-mails in 1-2 days. it does get very annoying
MxxCon
cnet or somebody had a story about spammer and how they make a mad money. well this chick said to get rid of any legal problems she provide real valid unsubscribe method. she said it isn't a problem when 10 out of 100k ppl unsubscribe. and she can always harvest more emails. even tho many people say "why unsubscribe when you didn't subscribe" sometimes it can indeed decrease amount of spam you get. but indeed be carefull with this.
