Firewall Software

Recommended Posts

What options are there for software firewalls? I've looked at Norton Personal Firewal but what else is there? I see Mcafee has two a boxed firewall and a downloadable one, what are the differences between the two? What other software firewalls are there that can monitor incomming and outgoing traffic and block ICMP packets?

Zonealarm Pro... which I use and like ... causes me no probs, has a good ad blocker too, and also Kerio 2 (free) .. which lets me voice chat ok thru messenger (ZA Pro won't.- take note, ZA!)

I'm also trying Kerio personal firewall 3 (still in beta but worth a look since i saw Freeza reccomend it in another thread) .. go see it at http://www.kerio.com/us/beta_section.html .. no crashes or hangs on it so far :D

There is ...

Sygate Personal FireWall Pro v5.0

ZoneLabs ZoneAlarm Pro v3.5.166

and there is Tiny or Keiro (personally I do not like these two becuase the just close ports, they don't hide them)

I have used both Sygate and ZoneAlarm .. and I like them both.

- currently using Sygate.

and then there is the legendary ATGuard ..which became Norton ( IMO they totally destroyed it )

BlackIce .. I don't trust, always comes in as one of the last ones in FireWall tests, but I never tried it though.

i think zonealarm pro is the best (even though it blocks out voice chat) other than that it is pretty good , hasn't caused me any problems , also it can hold up when someone is packeting you trust me i know, it has many features that would take ages to list so just try it ,ZoneLabs Site

I was using Norton Internet Secuity 2001, and was happy with it... Until it began to interfere with soemthing on my network. There was some issue that may be resolved with 2003.

So I switched to Zone Alarm Pro. Works well, and is easy to set up. You can set program access rights manually, or it will prompt you when a program tries to conenct to the internet -- then you set the access rights there. No software conflicts!

I liked Norton alot and probably its best feature is that it has constant updates to itself unlike say ZA, kerio and others where you have to physically update them.

But the liveupdate is also why I stopped using it. I had the same problem as SonicYouthXY, one day one of the updates I dl'ed fubared something with how my games ran online, and I never tracked down which update it was, so I switched to kerio. It was nice because they can get you updated rules for recently found windows vulnerabilities but at the same time, it was always changing so I can't track what *version* worked best.

With the other firewalls if the latest version doesn't work I know the one right before it did so I can keep using that, but with Norton, I'm always wanting to download the latest update, it's an addiction lol.

ZAPro (but i use a router) if it broke then i'd definately use that.
