Tantawi
Hi, I'm just making this thread to tell you not to trust any hardware drivers updates on Microsoft(Windows?) Update just because it's there! Today I was checking Windows Update as usual, and noticed it have an update for "VIA-Storage Primary IDE Channel": I was like WTH? I don't have a single VIA chipset in my system (MSI 865PE platinum edition), with Intel ICH5 and with no raid or anything that could use a VIA thing, I always get my IDE drivers from Intel Inf and didn't ever put any VIA file on my HDD! Then I thought I might be stupid and how would I know better than MS? :alien: so let it install and reboot, and BAAM, BSOD in the first second of Windows boot. I tried "Last known good mode" and it booted. Anyone is having a similar update on Microsoft Update now? -T- Member Posted February 16, 2007 Member Share Posted February 16, 2007 Yeah, It's offering me drivers for a webcam I do not have, I'll assume this is a Vista issue which will be worked out imminently Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/539323-microsoft-update-offers-wrong-hardware-drivers/#findComment-588325771 Share on other sites

HoochieMamma
My old webcam had wrong drivers forced onto it every time it would try to get them from WU, I submitted the same bug report like 3 times during the Vista beta/RC period. Microsoft simply doesn't care. Tantawi
I'm running Microsoft Update on XP, not Vista, and Vista has it's own Windows Update in the Windows control panel :) Thanks for replies, I'm not alone then! testman
It's always been like that, since the year dot. On my work machine it lists 2003 drivers for my NVIDIA card, even though I've got the latest official NVIDIA drivers installed. The general concensus is not to ever trust it for hardware drivers updates. SacrificialSoldier
It keeps wanting me to install a year Old driver for my Intel Pro\1000 Network card That's stupid as I already have the newer driver. +allan MVC Posted February 16, 2007 MVC Share Posted February 16, 2007 You should never download drivers from Windows update anyway - always obtain them from the OEM websites.
