Home Networking Question

Recommended Posts

I created a virutal directory using IIS a couple of days ago. I just got a laptop and I set up a home network, so the computer was not directly connected to the internet any longer...and the IP is now local *192.168....*

How do I make it so people can access the virtual directory, through the network??

I've also noticed that I can't send/receive files on MSN. I think I need to forward some port to make it work? Which port is that, and how?

how did you configure the network? with a router? or two NICs in a single computer? broadband connection?

and why set up a virtual directory using IIS instead of just sharing out a folder?

Share it as a folder, it's easier then trying to get it to work through a web browser and IP address. That requires the router to have special features that allow net returns inside the network.

As for MSN, yeah, I have the same problems with AIM sometimes (I don't use MSN) but in AIM it tells you what ports it uses to send files. I would imagine MSN does the same...so, open them up in port forwarding, and you should be good.

anyone?

maybe i'm doing it wrong, but forwarding ports didn't help me, so far

- i can't send files on msn

- can't access my personal webserver *virtual directory created using IIS* from a remote location...(anywhere outside of this home network)
