Are there any programs out there which will let me run older games such as c&c red alert 2 in a custom resolution? I'd really like to be running it in 1280x1024 instead of 1024x768.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

uhhhh from my understanding you could get to 1280x1024 easily... are you speaking of RA1 ?

No, the highest it lets me choose is 1024x768.

The game looks better than last year's Tiberian Sun, but similar. For the most part, the graphics in Red Alert 2 are colorful and detailed. But the tiny units can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from one another, especially if you play the game in the highest resolution of 1024x768.

This seems to be the games default resolution, you might be able to edit it from the ini file

How do I play online in 1280x1024?

I changed the ini file to play games in 1280x1024. Works great in single player, and online if I host myself. However any game I join mentions the game I join must be played at 640x480. I am not playing any quick matches, only custom matches.

RA2 had the same and I used the tool ra2qmres to allow me to join with any resolution chosen. I cant find a similar tool for yuri. Is there a way?

My TFT is native 1280x1024 so I would really like to play that way.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This one's pretty easy. Just go to the game directory, open up the .ini file "sun.ini" for TS or "ra2.ini" or RA2 and look for these lines:

[Video]

ScreenWidth=1024

ScreenHeight=768

StretchMovies=no

Just change the ScreenWidth and ScreenHeight values to your favorite WS resolution. The screen real estate will increase accordingly.

Setting StretchMovies to "yes" will cause Tiberian Sun to have the movies fill the screen instead of windowboxing them. At a 16:10 resolution, the proportions will be correct. This doesn't seem to have any effect in RA2, though.

Screenshots here

Not really. Most games support resolutions (as in hows this different from one player at 1024x768 and another at 1900x1200 in CNC3) and if they wanted it hard coded to prevent higher theyd use a method other than the ini file to control it. Not like your seeing something they cant, just you get more on screen.

edit: on that note theres nothing stopping them from upping the setting either

too bad that doesn't work for the games that came with TFD, the *.ini files are missing from their folders... :unsure: :pinch:

I just re-installed and I have the ra2.ini file in the RA2 folder... Maybe you need to run the game once first.

no C&C love for me... :cry:

I bought TFD a while back and a play a bit of the first C&C but didn't install the other games, now that I'd installed all the set on Vista Ultimate x32 it gives me this error on RA2 and TS, I already installed the updates and tried running both games on compatibility mode but they still don't work... :unsure:

error on RA2.

Yea I tried it for Tiberian Sun also, you need to run the game first so it can create the *.ini file.

yup, once I run the game the *.ini file is created but I get those error messages... :pinch:

I get the same error on RA2, I'm trying a re-install just to be sure. Hopefully this is something EA can patch. :(

Edit: Speaking of which, is there an easy way to add a higher res icon to the Games Explorer? Or do I have to just change the icon of the game shortcut and it'll transfer over? And finally, I remember years ago making high res icons for games and usch was a big part of Neowin. Where can I find some of these icons now?

take a look at the official C&C: TFD support forum, it doesn't seems like EA has plans to bring a 1.03 to fix all those issues... :angry: :unsure: :cry:

Why would they bother patching that? Wouldn't make sense.

It wouldn't make sense for them to patch a game to the latest operating system being used? I would think it makes perfect sense. They did, after all, bring the original C&C up to XP.

I thought patch 1.03 was to bring online to the original C&C and RA. I just want a path to make it work in Vista.

Woah! Never mind! I just opened the Game Explorer and it gave me some prompt about updating automatically and the box art for Red Alert 2 was downloaded! Now my question is how can one force the update to happen? I have Titan Quest that I just re-installed and it's showing the little 32x32 icon in that window.

try forcing it by cleaing the cache in the option menu, restart the system and see if it works out. :happy: :yes:

<Snip> Nevermind, it's been mentioned several times already in the thread how to do it, I should of read the entire thread before posting :blush: opps!

EDIT: Slightly off topic, one thing I noticed about the Game Explorer in Vista is it seems picky about what games it will auto detect and get the cover art for. It has no trouble with C&C, C&C: Red Alert etc but it won't detect Generals or Zero Hour :s (well it didn't for me) I'm guessing eventually it will, but not that it bothers me since I use XP for gaming :p (my games run very badly/not at all in Vista)

I have the same question. All the C&C games before RA2 get automatically put into the Game Explorer when they're run except for Generals and Zero Hour (oh, and Renegade too). If you add them in manually will they eventually get updated? Do you just make a shortcut for the .exe? I had dragged Titan Quest in there and then deleted it to see if it would "auto-add" but it hasn't.
