Some Important Virtual memory ready boost questions

Recommended Posts

I just recently installed vista on my current machine, duel booting I still have xp on drive c and vista on d.

I bought a 4 GB Ready boost drive from new egg for not too much, and I have that installed and working. (see attached photo)

I am wondering if I switched my virtual memory from drive d (c according to vista) to drive c (win xp) would I have problems. Put simpler can I use virtual memory off of my windows xp drive when I still have XP on that drive, or will that hurt things? When I attempt I get a waining message that isn't very clear see attached photo.

From http://computer.howstuffworks.com/virtual-memory1.htm

"you have multiple hard drives, you can get the best performance by using the least busy drive for virtual memory. For example, if you have a D: drive on which you store documents, it may be better to use that, rather than the C: drive, because the C: drive is pretty busy with Windows and your installed programs. If you have multiple physical drives, you can get a little performance boost by splitting the paging file across the two drives. A single drive that?s partitioned into two or more partitions, to look like multiple drives, doesn?t count. You don?t want to divide the paging file across multiple partitions on a single drive, because that will have the reverse effect of slowing things down. If you do opt for a custom size, you can work with any one hard drive at a time. The drives are listed by letter and label at the top of the dialog box. In the example shown, all of the partitions actually reside on a single disk."

Assuming I'm doing this all for best preformace...

I currently have GB physical ram.

Thanks again

If you have multiple drives, it's always best to get the page file on a drive other than the one your current windows install is on. Your XP install would be fine. That warning message is letting you know that if you get a system crash and don't leave a 20mb pagefile on the vista drive, you may not get a record of what exactly crashed and the details surrounding it.
