I have two computers in my office, one running Windows 98 and the other running Windows XP Pro. What I basically want to do is control the Windows 98 desktop from the PC running Windows XP. I know the reverse is possible. But is it possible to run the Windows 98 PC as RD host? All the searches say that only Windows XP can be run as host and that there is only client software available for Windows 98.

Also if this is not possible what is the best alternative? It seems VNC is supposed to be good but will I be able to run the DOS applications on the Windows 98 PC well from the Windows XP client or will there be screen resolution and refresh rate problems or keyboard/mouse lags?

Please do advice asap as my whole Office Accounting system depends on this from tomorrow. It will not be possible to make any OS/Software changes in the short term on either PC.

There is no server version of Remote Desktop for Windows 98, your best bet would be VNC. As both machines are connected to the same network, you'd have no issues with turning all the features up to maximum, speed wise. I've used VNC to help people using dial-up connections in the past, the quality was fine with only a couple of seconds lag with opening windows etc.

Alright then. VNC it is.

What'll be best. Real VNC Enterprise or Tight VNC or Ultra VNC or some other? I dont need security features as I wont be accessing thi s through internet, only LAN. Primary focus is on Ease of use and Screen Resolution support in Win98 DOS.

Not sure about the other VNC software but I use RealVNC personally and thing its brilliant. Its free for the Personal Edition. I use it at home for remoting to other PCs on my LAN and to family PCs over t'net for a bit of support.

It supports Windows 98 but it has mentioned a small issue in the FAQ:

If you're running the VNC server under Windows 95/98/ME then sending a remote Ctrl-Alt-Del function will not work at all. On these platforms, Ctrl-Alt-Del causes all programs, including the VNC server, to halt and bring up a task manager window.
