temple_treefrog
I'm shocked. So was I. I think Apple releases some of their programs on the Windows platform for marketing. I've seen people who have purchased Mac hardware simply because they "like the way iTunes works" or because "Mac's look good". One of the webpages on the Apple website almost confirms Apple applications are used as a marketing tool: http://www.apple.com/getamac/software.html Anyway, if this is the flagship browser for the Mac, I'd say those guys have some pretty low browsing standards. I think Apple does a better job at building applications for Mac OS X. Keep in mind it's in beta testing stages so of course it's no where near the standard of the latest stable release for Mac, and also this is the very first Windows release. crazzyyfool
Anyway, if this is the flagship browser for the Mac, I'd say those guys have some pretty low browsing standards. Safari on a Mac is a million times better than Safari on a PC. Don't assume that this Safari Beta on Windows is anything like it is on the Mac. Just like iTunes and QuickTime are pants on a PC, they are far superior on Mac OS X. dh5
It's clearly fast. Very fast. Like, noticeably fast, loading a half dozen sites (that take IE7 or FF2 a few seconds) within a blink of an eye. If nothing else, they've set the performance bar higher. "Blogger Scott Hanselman on Safari running on Windows" Wow, some us are getting a sour deal then  Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/566567-apple-safari-to-be-released-for-the-windows-platform/page/15/#findComment-588620440 Share on other sites

Not one crash, bug, or issue at all. Excellent loading time, no sluggishness, and rendering is within the blink of an eye. It's ridiculously awesome for me. shadowmatt
Apple's Safari beta is probably designed to run on WindowsXP Service Pack 2 with all the current updates. Now going by all the windows users I have conversed with in the past on Neowin the OS they are using wont be a standard XP installation. You guys love to hack windows, changing styles, deleting ot replacing components, running the latest Nvidia beta drivers etc... It may be your system isnt right for safari at the moment. Hell why not post a bug report, you all did with the Vista betas. And that didnt run too well then, still doesnt IMHO. Southern Patriot
Ok... My first impressions, and I tried liking it, I really did: It's as ugly as f*ck. The font rendering is horrible. Completely out-of place on windows, cleartype looks tons better. Looks like someone applied gaussian blur. Extreme startup time and memory usage. No autoscroll. No extension support. I can't imagine browsing without adblock plus and filterset.g updater. No right clicking on images? What the hell? Lack of icons in bookmarks. For one, I tend to recognize my bookmarks also by the icons. Anyway, if this is the flagship browser for the Mac, I'd say those guys have some pretty low browsing standards. All of the things that you mentioned in your list would be specific to the Windows version, because those aren't problems with the Mac version. Express
^^I don't think you read his complain list. There is no way it is machine specific. tiagosilva29
^^I don't think you read his complain list. There is no way it is machine specific. It's as ugly as f*ck. -> Not a native application, and violates when I learned about HCI, but the point is clearly to lure people to the Mac plataform. It's not ugly per se, just misplaced (or not). The font rendering is horrible. Completely out-of place on windows, cleartype looks tons better. Looks like someone applied gaussian blur. -> Different fonts, different renderings, different plataforms, and an issue with contrast. Extreme startup time and memory usage. -> I have no issues on startuptime (instantaneous counts?), no rendering lag, no rendering issues whatsoever. Just the normal beta crashes. I've checked several dubious Unicode languages, some are a bit incomplete, but then again, it's fixable. No autoscroll. -> Fixable. Remember: different platforms, beta. No extension support. I can't imagine browsing without adblock plus and filterset.g updater. -> ...Yet. There are extentions for Safari in the Mac plataform. Check pimpmysafari.com, for instance. Could it be brought to here? Maybe. No right clicking on images? What the hell? -> No issues here. Lack of icons in bookmarks. For one, I tend to recognize my bookmarks also by the icons. -> I don't use bookmarks, but it's clearly fixable. Anyway, if this is the flagship browser for the Mac, I'd say those guys have some pretty low browsing standards. -> Suck to be him. falconcy
Install was quick, that's where the speed ended. Once I fired up the browser, the page rendering was really slow, much slower than FF and IE7. The "mac like" interface looked totally out of place on Vista. Fonts looked crap, even changing them around to either Lucida Grande or Sergoe UI. Got the same error when I quit as other users here reported. Lasted all of 5 mins before I uninstalled it. ServerMechanic
As much as I want to like it here are my problems: 1. I need to find adblocking support. 2. I would prefer to be able to change the ugly monochrome theme. 3. It does use a boatload of memory, but that isn't any different than iTunes. I'm wondering if Apple just has issues writing code for Windows. 4. When I visit certain sites (like eBay) the fonts look all messed up and small. It's not been a good experience. It is somewhat fast but not faster than Firefox. It will take a boatload of things to get me off of Firefox. I hate IE with a passion and I would rather use it than Safari. xpablo
I couldn't even get it to work properly on Vista, the only sites it would load were Apple related. I'll stick with IE & FF. Southern Patriot
^^I don't think you read his complain list. There is no way it is machine specific. I did read the list: It's as ugly as f*ck. - Personal opinion, so I won't count this one The font rendering is horrible. Completely out-of place on windows, cleartype looks tons better. Looks like someone applied gaussian blur. - Windows specific issue not an issue on the Mac version Extreme startup time and memory usage. - Again, not an issue on the Mac version, and others have reported that it starts up very fast No autoscroll. - that is a feature of a specific set of mouse drivers, not the browser No extension support. I can't imagine browsing without adblock plus and filterset.g updater. - As someone else pointed out, there are extensions to Safari on the Mac, including ad blockers. What was he expecting? That people would have already written extensions for a browser that no one outside of Apple knew was being ported? No right clicking on images? What the hell? - Right clicking on images works for me both under OS X and XP Lack of icons in bookmarks. For one, I tend to recognize my bookmarks also by the icons - The default bookmarks don't have icons at first, but if you save your own bookmark it has an icon. I have noticed that the Mac beta seems to have cleared the icon cache when it installed, but they are returning after visiting some sites a few times. I'll mark this one down as somewhat valid, but probably just a bug in the beta but still as incompatible as anyhting The only site that I have issues with under Safari is the site that my employer uses for us to view our paychecks, etc. That is because it is written specifically for IE though, so any other browser besides IE won't display it either. PaulCabby
No autoscroll. - that is a feature of a specific set of mouse drivers, not the browser Then why does Firefox, Internet Explorer and Opera have auto scrolling? Southern Patriot
Then why does Firefox, Internet Explorer and Opera have auto scrolling? Perhaps we are talking about different things then, because I've only ever noticed auto scrolling as part of my Logitech trackball's drivers. Linkinfamous
Autoscroll = click the mouse wheel and move the mouse down slightly to make the page scroll continuously. It's not part of any mouse drivers. Southern Patriot
Autoscroll = click the mouse wheel and move the mouse down slightly to make the page scroll continuously. It's not part of any mouse drivers. There are different autoscroll features in some mouse drivers. Probably the reason that I've never really noticed that those browsers have that feature is because one of the first things I do when I set up a computer is set the middle mouse button (or the wheel button) to double click. That must be overriding the autoscroll feature that you are talking about.
