Evil Dragon
So we have a wireless network in our house. The router is set up on the second floor, and so far everything has gone well with it. But now we got Xbox Live for x-mas and we set up a wireless dealy for that, but's it's too far away, so the connnection sucks and half the time we can't get on. By placing aluminum foil around the antenna we have so far been able to play, but not well. We tried buying an access point and putting it in the middle of the two. Doesn't work. So I ask you - how can I make the damn thing work?!?!? Thanks a bunch. ;)

How can something of a higher frequency get less than something of a lower frequency thats obsered! Hardware comparison - in meters 802.11a (5Ghz) range. 328 (indoors) 1148(outdoors) 802.11b (2.4Ghz) range. 91M 457m Edited December 28, 2002 by xStainDx
persianpsycho
if you've got time to do it, do that pringles thing, feed the pringles to your dog or something, they're kinda tasteless imo.

Avian
Technically because of the higher frequency of 5ghz on 11a it has a lot of trouble going through walls and other thick objects, so its not that great for a house setting because of all the different rooms, an office on the other hand would work perfect as they only use cubes. At 2.4ghz, theoretically 11b has a higher range, higher frequency doesn't mean better. After testing all the major brands, I've found for 11b the best solution is the microsoft MN-500, it outperforms Linksys, Netgear, D-Link in wireless range by a long shot. I can be anywhere in my house and still get full signal strength with my tablet pc's built in wireless card, I was lucky to get a connection most places in my house with the other hardware. Hard to believe microsoft is better but its true, good thing I got it for free being a tester.
NeoMayhem
Yeah, you are right, but *In General* the 2.4ghz wireless networks have a longer range :p After testing all the major brands, I've found for 11b the best solution is the microsoft MN-500, it outperforms Linksys, Netgear, D-Link in wireless range by a long shot. With my D-Link DI-614+ and the PCMCIA cards (DWL-650+) I have never gotten below 85% signal strength and 92% link quality. This is also a 3800 square foot house with 6 bedrooms. The size of your house is a big consideration here. The structural quality and building materials is also a big factors. You generally want to have your wireless card at a 90 degree angle with any type of wall.
Steven
if 802.11b is better in "general" then all i'm gonna say is... that 802.11b is obsolete, 802.11g will be replacing it. 2.4Ghz @ 54Mb/s instead of 2.4Ghz @ 11Mb/s so if anyone is planning on going for 2.4GHz, look @ 802.11g.
