blogee
i have a maxtor 4 d040h2 HD (SCSI) and i am trying to re install XP Pro on my pc. when i boot up with the XP CD, it asks if i want SCSI support so i push yes, then i put in a stiffy with files i downloaded off the net to support it and then it proceeds. it still says CANNOT FIND HARD DRIVE. HELP, i cannot install XP w/o a hard drive!!! but it is working, Windows sees it, why wont the install see it? Puggsley
Make sure you have the correct drivers for the type of RAID you have setup. Also check that you have created a drive in the SCSI utility. Puggsley
1) Most manufacturers provide two drivers. 1 for a single drive (JBOD), and one for multiple drivers (RAID). If you are using the RAID driver for a single driver it will most likely not find the drive 2) When the computer first starts you will normally have the option to enter the SCSI or RAID config utility. You need to check that the drive has been properly configured as a stand alone disk. Drives are not usually setup automatically. Seagate took over Maxtor and i cannot find the driver on their site. 2 -couldnt find any way to enter a boot configuration, normally its the function keys that will get into the setup, i cant see anything. this is really annoying, i spent a while backing stuff up, now it wont let me install!!! Puggsley
You don't need a driver for the drive. You need it for the SCSI controller. Make sure there is a txtsetup.oem file in the root of the floppy disk Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/568720-installing-xp-on-scsi-drive/#findComment-588642231 Share on other sites
blogee
i download some file that extracted an "F6" folder which is the key needed to push when requiring a scsi or raid drive for installation. it then goes through the motions and says that it has found the controller and then it carries on, but it still cannot see the drive even after doing that. is there no way to just format the drive and do a fresh install and avoid all this?!? +orgitnized Subscriber¹ Posted June 21, 2007 Subscriber¹ Share Posted June 21, 2007 Download this ZIP file and extract it to a floppy disk. I have the same controller and these are the correct drivers. I'll be honest, I integrate the drivers into nLite for stuff like this and rarely ever use floppy disks. Point being, I'm not sure if extracting this right to the root of a floppy disk will work, but I'm pretty sure you'll be ok. This will load up the necessary support for installing Windows on your SCSI drive. Post back and let us know your results. +orgitnized Subscriber¹ Posted June 21, 2007 Subscriber¹ Share Posted June 21, 2007 Try and take only the 3 files that are in the actual WINXP folder in that ZIP file and put it on the root of the floppy instead (delete all files on the floppy first). Post back your results after trying it again. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/568720-installing-xp-on-scsi-drive/#findComment-588642749 Share on other sites
blogee
ok, tried both, the 2nd way doesnt work, you need the txtsetup.oem. figured that much out. the other files u gave me were the ones i found on the net. your txtsetup.oem was newer than mine but didnt work, had to replace it with mine. it says that it will use the controller found on the disk and carries on the setup. then it says press enter to install, r to repair etc. i press enter and it says that no disk found!! please say u have more tricks up ur sleeve... +orgitnized Subscriber¹ Posted June 21, 2007 Subscriber¹ Share Posted June 21, 2007 I might have missed your comment, but did you do as Puggsley suggested? you have to first enter in the SCSI utility that loads up during the boot process (before Windows gets started) to basically make a partition. If you have not done this, Windows isn't going to load, because although it will see the controller, it won't see a partition as being created since you didn't do that step. I'm assuming you didn't, because if you did, install would see a partition and ask you to format it. (Basically you were already at the step that I had you do again because I didn't read carefully enough. If it sees the controller you are well off. But if it doesn't see the disk, it's because there's no partitions assigned to the controller.) Give us an update when you get a chance. blogee
thanks so much for trying to help me. i'm pulling my hair out here. i cannot find this utility that you are referring to. how do i access it? is there a special key i'm meant to press during boot up? i cannot see anything in my BIOS? Thanks a lot...this is one time i am looking forward to installing...i just wanna get through this wall!! Puggsley
It should tell you what key to press when the computer is going through the POST Test. Do you see text regarding SCSI, RAID, or your SCSI Controller before the Windows CD boots? Puggsley
If you don't see it then there could be a problem with the SCSI controller. SCSI drives take time to spin up and initialize so the controller will normally search for disks then spin them up one at a time. This can take over a minute to do. Is there anyway you can prove the controller works? What type of SCSI is it? blogee
its a maxtor 4D040H2 - i found on the Hd a code D540-4D which i googled the following link http://developer.novell.com/yes/65190.htm how do i know if this HD is indeed a scsi HD. i dont understand why i would have a SCSI HD in my regular P4 desktop...any ideas Attached is a photo i took now of the HD with all its info - could it be that its not a SCSI drive but my comp is seeing it as one? blogee
ok - thats good news...but then why is windows setup not seeing it and why windows in the device manager giving me a scsi controller? surely i would also see the HD in my BIOS then? However, in my BIOS, i can choose my MAXTOR HD as a boot device, but the why is windows setup not seeing it? something seems wrong? drivers.bmpFetching info... Puggsley
Its IDE RAID. The way windows works though it treats it as SCSI. Go into the BIOS and somewhere you will find a mode for the hard drive. You will probably have the option of IDE/JBOD or RAID. Make sure it is set to a single disk or standard IDE. What motherboard do you have?
