peacemf
as for the error 8007045D is it true: "The WD World Book come preconfigured with a Linux File System. Reformatting this device to NTFS was not a good thing. Linux and NTFS are not compatible. The original file system was probably something like Reser FS. I think you will need to restore the device to Factory defaults if there is an option for that" got that info from a dell forum, also it seems as though WD hasnt really had many complaints about this issue, although it seems to be pretty much posted all over the net :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/572515-western-digital-my-book-pro-edition-500gb-review/page/3/#findComment-588738301 Share on other sites

This is what I recommend, For use with: Mac OS X only: HFS+ Journaled Windows 2000/XP/Vista only: NTFS Mac OS X and Windows 2000/XP/Vista: FAT32 / Split the drive in two partitions one HFS+ Journaled, one NTFS / HFS+ Journaled and install MacDrive on Windows so it can read Mac formatted drives Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/572515-western-digital-my-book-pro-edition-500gb-review/page/3/#findComment-588739363 Share on other sites
IncidentFlux
hey thanks for all the help guys.... best has the 500gb my book premium edition on sale for 150$ i think im gonna go get me one today.... ive also got another question... i plan on going for pc to mac with this so should i leave the drive how it is or is there a better format to reformat to? It's a single drive, so a FAT32 file system would give you the most felixibility, without partitioning or limiting access in any operating system. houlty
except fat32 cant handle files bigger than 4gb can it??? i could be wrong... IncidentFlux
except fat32 cant handle files bigger than 4gb can it???i could be wrong... Nope, You are right, forgot about that completely,?but?few?people?work?with?single?files?larger?than?4GB,?if?one?doesn't?work with?files?larger?than?4GB and?portability?is?more?important, then FAT?32?would?be?the?only?ideal?answer.? matthewf01
was checking out the black ones on Newegg for someone... the reviews on newegg seem to indicate a troubling somewhat high failure rate for those drives... Reccommended a SeaGate FreeAgent instead... plus the longer warranty is nice! JaganSix
I purchased one of these about two months ago. LOVE IT! and linux (ubuntu) reads it just fine. jwoo
Nope, You are right, forgot about that completely, but few people work with single files larger than 4GB, if one doesn't work with files larger than 4GB and portability is more important, then FAT 32 would be the only ideal answer. hrm....are files bigger than 4gb that common? and its just files right?? not like a folder thats bigger than 4gbs Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/572515-western-digital-my-book-pro-edition-500gb-review/page/3/#findComment-588757842 Share on other sites
houlty
hrm....are files bigger than 4gb that common? and its just files right?? not like a folder thats bigger than 4gbs depends what you use your drive/computer for... personally, i need to store video captures on them, which can range from a few hundred megs, to 30gb... therefore for me, it cant be fat32. and yes, it is just individual files, not folders (else how would the drive contain anything more that 4gb, because the drive is just a lot of folders in folders in folders etc...) karma_police
I got the 400GB Premium Edition almost a year ago and it is awesome, the best external driver I've ever bought. It doesn't say anything about Linux because the software isn't compatible with it but the drive works just fine, I use it with XP and ArchLinux. I partitioned it so I have 2 NTFS, 1 FAT32 and 1 EXT3 partition. I also recommend it. IncidentFlux
hrm....are files bigger than 4gb that common? and its just files right?? not like a folder thats bigger than 4gbs As mentioned above, if you're into video capture, edit or playout etc or even ripping and dumping entire DVD image ISO's which will be in most?cases around?4.7?to?8.5?gigs, or?15?to?50?gigs?if?you're?into ripping HD-DVD or Blue-ray discs. Then FAT32 is no good for you. .Neo
I have the Premium 500gig edition for 4 months now. My whole life is in that drive. What are the chance of it failing? The chances are just as big as with any other quality HDD. If you have really sensitive files on it, such as personal photos, I recommend backing them up to DVDs as well. Just in case. DeAd-EyE
appologies for bumping this again, i was wondering if anyone has had a drive failure yet? i was looking at the reviews of this drive on the mac website and there was a 50/50 split. Some people said it was great and worked properly, while others just hated it and said it never worked and some had drive failures. has anyone had one die on them? DeAd-EyE
good to know. i know they also released a new version (changed the case and ring LED to a black case with a bar style LED). i was hoping that someone whose used My Book for a year or more could let me know if they've had issues. I'm sure they must have fixed all the bugs by the 2nd version rite? Western Digital is supposed 2 be a decent HDD company anyhow. russellc
Yeah I heard about stability issues such as that before when I was shopping for an external hard drive. I finally ended up opting for a NexStar enclosure that had a FireWire 400 (I believe it was 400) interface + USB 2.0 interface and purchased a 500 GB Western Digital hard drive. Works fine and dandy. I personally don't much see the advantage of these "pre-built" external hard drives. Thanks for the review though. Sadly the amount of reviews stating that their external hard drive failed convinced me to go for the separate enclosure + hard drive option.
