b0m8er
Hey guys, I'm planning on getting a MacBook this summer and I have couple questions: 1. I'm using Outlook 2007 on my PC right now - is there Outlook in Office for Mas suite? And will I be able to use my database with emails, contacts and calendar from my current pc? 2. Does Bootcamp support Vista??? 3. I have WM5 phone - will I be able to sync it with my outlook on mac like I do using MobileDevice Center in Vista? 4. How does mac behave on a network with windows pcs? Any trouble with file and printer shareing? That's all I can think of now... I appreciate all replies ;) Edited July 9, 2007 by b0m8er Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/572796-couple-mac-questions/ Share on other sites

BigDaddy5
1) No, but entourage is in the Office suite. Right now it's still a PPC, however when Office 2008 comes out, it will be a universal binary. 2004 will run on an intel mac, but it's a tad slow. 2) Yep 3) It all depends on the device. Some devices sync beautifully with a mac. I'm not sure how entourage works since I just use address book, mail, and ical, but all of them sync very nicely with my phones. 4) It's a tad different when it comes to file sharing, but after my initial hiccups getting everything to talk right (not just a problem with Windows vs. Mac, I had problems with some windows machines talking to each other too), it works just fine. I appreciate all replies ;) 1) There's Entourage for the Mac, which comes in the Office suite and "replaces" Outlook. I don't know how well it works with Outlook stuff... But I figure pretty well... since it's supposed to be the "Mac Outlook" 2) Yes 3) With Outlook I'm not so sure. But there are programs that sync WM devices with Mac OS X. Look around for The Missing Sync and stuff like that. 4) It behaves just fine. I can access Windows Shares fine. I can't share my printer, though (Canon PIXMA iP1000 connected to Windows) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/572796-couple-mac-questions/#findComment-588688048 Share on other sites

ritsuke Veteran Posted July 9, 2007 Veteran Share Posted July 9, 2007 4. How does mac behave on a network with windows pcs? Any trouble with file and printer shareing? If you need to access a server that uses Active Directory/Domain, you'll have issues with authentication and will be unable to access shares. Tiger's version of Samba doesn't have the ability to encrypt for credentials. You can fix this by either updating Samba, manually (pain in the butt / with devtools and macport) or purchase a $150 app. You could also lower the security on your server, but of course wouldn't recommend that. I would imagine Leopard to have the latest version. Other than that, basic windows <> mac file sharing works wonderfully. :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/572796-couple-mac-questions/#findComment-588688073 Share on other sites

david.rothera
macbook looks sexier than any other laptop :p When I first switched over to Mac's about 18 months ago I used Outlook a LOT! and I found that Entourage was actually better in some aspects than its Windows brethrin. Give the trial a go and see what you think, and yes Vista can be installed full time if you really wanted to... SnowRanger13
Why you all talking about Entourage it sucks... Mail works way better and syncing phones works great on most any phone that support syncing. Mail is OS Xs Default email program. I've attached a screen shot of the first step of importing emails into Mail. Looks like it only has Outlook Express and not Outlook (2003, or 2007) but I believe there are still easy ways to do it, check out what google finds for you :p. BGraceTFaith
Here's the thing about Entourage though, its really only necessary if you are stuck using an Exchange account. If you dont have to use an Exchange account, I would completely move away from using Outlook/Entourage all together. Before I switched, I couldn't possibly sing enough praise about Outlook. I used it exclusively for about 5 years. If I ever ran across an email address that wouldn't work with it, I cancelled that email account. I was addicted to Outlook. But, when I switched, I didn't like learning to use Entourage. Plus, I just felt better about letting Apple's default apps take care of the jobs they were meant to handle. See, if you use Entourage on the Mac, you'll lack support for virtually all of the Mac's built in interconnectability between its different apps. When I switched, I installed the entire Office 2004 Suite, except Entourage. I've been using Mail, Address Book, and Calendar exclusively since I switched and couldn't possibly be happier. In all seriousness, I think if you give them a try for a while at first, you'll find they work great. Also, if you need to transfer all of your current email, calendar, and contact information to your Mac, there is a great program that will do it almost seamlessly. It's called O2M. Here's the link: http://www.littlemachines.com/ PM me if you're interested and I may be able to *help* you use the registered version. BGraceTFaith
Cause as far as I understand Entourage=Outlook and I have all my stuff in outlook, and see no reason to ditch outlook - cause there's simply no better all-in-one app. That was the exact same thing I thought before I switched. Trust me, there is life on the other side, I swear. Apple's Mail, Address Book, and Calendar work together so well that they almost are like an all-in-one app. OS-X uses Address Book exclusively, so anything you do involving contact information outside of Entourage will be directed at Address Book. It is all designed to work together, and the OS does an amazing job of handling it. And this is coming from a serious Outlook zombie. I honestly hate using Outlook now. SnowRanger13
Cause as far as I understand Entourage=Outlook and I have all my stuff in outlook, and see no reason to ditch outlook - cause there's simply no better all-in-one app. Mail isn't all in one, but it is highly integrated with Address book and iCal It gets even better in 10.5 if someone emails you "board meeting tomorrow" you can click on the word tomorrow and it will add it to iCal, it knows what day the email was sent so tomorrow is not that hard for it to figure out but it even puts board meeting in the title. Of course this won't effect many people till October but it works amazing! Edit: the main reason I hate Entourage for mail is because at my work we had many people using it then after they had to many emails the Entourage database would corrupt, sure this was mostly cases with people that had 10,000's of emails but they needed all those emails as records for things (good thing we do user-backups so we got the emails back) but it was a real pain, we imported everyone into Mail and most of the people like it far better now. Axon
I too was at one time hopelessly addicted to Outlook in all it's 'glory'. When I switched, I thought the sky was going to fall without my It-takes-30-seconds-to-open-outlook. However much like the experiences already posted, I now use Mail, iCal, and Address Book and see how much better an experience it is! I can't remember the name of the program that I used to migrate all my data from Outlook's DB to Mail, et al, but it worked magnificently and all my data came over without a hitch. If/when you're ready to switch, PM me and I'd be happy to lend you a helping hand. -Ax Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/572796-couple-mac-questions/#findComment-588688556 Share on other sites
Quillz
Like others have said, give Mail, iCal and Address Book a try, they all work together very well. Entourage is only necessary for connecting to Exchange servers, beyond that, it's more or less like Outlook, which basically means you don't get many of the useful system-wide features that Mac OS X offers. einsteinbqat
I'm using Entourage I don't have any problems yet (touching wood). I have nearly 6000 messages. My database is 1.2G. It used to be above 2Go before I did some cleaning. Granted integration with the OS can't be compared with Mail, Entourage is nonetheless a good all-in-one app. I did try using the trio Mail/Address Book/iCal, but I never got used to it. So it's Entourage for me. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/572796-couple-mac-questions/#findComment-588689265 Share on other sites
