[Mac] Shutting your laptop lid without going into to sleep mode

Recommended Posts

Well I asked here when I first got my Macbook and nobody seemed to know of a way of doing it, but I have recently discovered this nifty little app: InsomniaX.

Does exactly what you'd expect. It runs in your menu bar and when enabled, if you shut your lid, it prevents it from going to sleep.

Nice little trick since Apple don't provide a way to do it in OS X.

For the people who are paranoid about their Mac overheating, Apple *do* have a way for you to do this, it's just.. a pain. In other words, you need to have a keyboard/mouse plugged in, shut your lid, then hit a key on the external keyboard. That is the only official supported way.

Anyway, have fun :)

It's an interesting concept, but I think I'd still prefer to have my MacBook go into sleep mode when the lid is closed. For one thing, doesn't the Sudden Motion Sensor only work in sleep mode?
