Tzimisce
I read those words in PC Gamer, "Ultimate Gamers Pad" so I was hooked. I picked up a Steel Series 5L Surface Precision mouse pad on Newegg with my next computer purchase. Upon arrival i ripped it out of the packaging, threw my old one away and went to it. Visually, this mouse pad is simply stunning! Beautiful blue futuristic designs offset my liquid metal Logitech Mx518 mouse. Tracking? Simply perfect! Never had my mouse skip a beat over the last 2 years of use. However, now 2 years later, the age is showing. The plastic sub surfacing is beginning to crack, as i tend to pull my mouse pad over the edge of my desk a bit to rest my wrist on. The cloth posterior holds it together tho and is as such unnoticeable. They also thought of the usual wrist movement of a user by arcing the surface facing the user to allow smooth side-to-side scrolling. This isn't really noticeable until you have spent extensive hours doing just that. Ive heard complaints about the mouse pad's size, which I find completely unfounded. I have never run out of mouse pad, comparatively this was an issue with me and smaller pads which I would run the mouse right off onto the desk, which can be a killer in a heated game of HL2: Death match. Now to the aging. Slight fraying becomes noticeable on the edges, but somehow seems to add to the overall look of this pad, while not damaging performance whatsoever. A few scratches have also become visible on the pad, (probably as a result of having a younger sibling who uses your computer) that i cannot seem to remove. They do not effect mouse tracking so I have not worried too much. The design has not faded at all and the pads on my mouse are hardly affected. This mouse pad is truly elite in its class. I will definitely be shelling out $40 for a new one when this one heads to tech heaven! I would give this mouse a 10/10.
Echilon
Are mousemats even still needed? Unless you're using a ball mouse I don't see the benefit.

chconline Veteran Posted October 13, 2007 Veteran Share Posted October 13, 2007 SteelSeries 5L? That's not 'ultimate' Sorry to troll on you but no offense, that pad is by FAR the best pad out there. Even their flagship SteelSeries SX, is quite closed, but not the ultimate. I have all of them. :p
MasterC
Are mousemats even still needed? Unless you're using a ball mouse I don't see the benefit. I have to use one because my desk is white, and the mouse doesn't pick up my movements.

SadJoker
Are mousemats even still needed? Unless you're using a ball mouse I don't see the benefit. Mouse pads enable much smoother and more fluid motion. It also requires less effort to move the mouse than if you were just using the surface of a desk. It's getting quite worn and the base is annoyingly slippery now.

I think seeing all the cables and general mess is a bit distracting while I'm working...

Reminds me of a time last year when my teacher asked me why his optical mouse wasn't working...I went over to his house and he had it on a glass desk with no mousepad. :pinch: Does anyone have a picture of the 5L?
