mFC_
i'm really bummed out that so many people seem to be having problems with this phone... i've been looking forward to it for months and months guess i'll stick with my k800i for now :p
Chemaz
the new update (the 37 version) seems to have fixed alot of probelms, iv experienced only one random restart since iv had the phone (bout 2weeks). The only issue i have with the phone is the camera, you cant cover up any of the back with ur fingers or the picture will come out dark. It seems the light sensor is the whole back of the phone, and does get a bit annoying at times. other than that i think the phone is pretty damn awesome
hjf288
The light sensor for the main screen is on the left hand side of the handset earpeace. The light sensor for the camera is on far left hand side towards the bottom end past the lens (which is closer to top)

KitCh
I really want to update the firmware on my handset, but it seems that it's not available through both the update service on the mobile or via SEUS which is really annoying. From what I've read and what they have told me over the phone (3UK), the only way that I'll get the new update right now is if i send it off for repair! I was tempted to debrand my mobile, but then that also causes problems e.g some of the wapsites provided by 3UK won't loads, MSN won't work etc... Do carphone warehouse express repair centres do firmware updates??? Worth a try if they do, although if hardly anywhere else has the update - I doubt they will. KitCh
Do carphone warehouse express repair centres do firmware updates??? Worth a try if they do, although if hardly anywhere else has the update - I doubt they will. Well according to the 3UK representative I spoke to on the phone, they said that the firmware can only be installed by their technicians when you send your phone in for repair, but I'll certainly give the carphone warehouse a visit and see if they are able to update it for me! You never know eh?! Cheers for the idea! :)
mickeytwist
i'm not certain about car phone warehouse - for one im not in the uk anymore - but you can generally get firmware updates from online and for one i found some via a retailer at Sony Ericsson K850i on the downloads tab. Hope that helps.
mickeytwist
Starting with this phone, I must admit it has a certain wow factor when you first put it in your hands. There are little tweaks that Sony did with this, that are evident, and make it more of a K900i phone, imo.Simple things such as: There is an on/off button for the camera, that auto opens/closes the lens, and upon opening, the ring around the lens glows blue. The xenon flash has been beefed up. the bottom part of the phone is touchscreen, ie where the soft keys used to be. There is no back cover to the device, and all the battery, sim, memory card are kept under a little flap under the charger port. The surface on the phone looks like the front of the iPod touch, and very scratch resilient. Now, on for some pictures :) This is the new Media Interface, and is kinda PSP/PS3 Style, and is accessible from the home menu, under media. There is still the traditional file manager hidden under organiser and tools, and sometimes I prefer using that, instead of faffing about with some fancy menu's all the time. Just a pic of the phone menu system here. This, is different to typical SE platforms, as it now has the 3 softkey style that a lot of nokia's have, so I guess with this phone SE are trying to convert a few people from N95's, but that, is the art of the contract phone. Most people will be stuck with a N95 probably until SE's next iteration of this phone. Here we have the phone, nothing special here ;) Right then.... Features This phone, noticeably, is all about the 5.0M Cybershot camera, and it's bloody damn good. Ignoring the phone buttons, this is possibly just a Digital Camera. There is the typical switch to change between shoot, video, and playback, and also a wealth of settings, Including ISO ones, that you can faff about with in the camera settings. The only downside to the camera, and SE know this, is that you have to be very careful on how you hold the camera, as I discovered, as you can cover the flash. This is included on a little sheet of paper in the box. Zoom....... Remember on the K800i it was all blocky, and not exatcly smooth? you'd press zoom and a week later it would have zoomed too far? Well SE have got that sorted. You press zoom now and its a smooth zoom action, well, smooth enough, and then it has to re-render the image again once zoomed in.. My only quibble with the device, it needs more ooomph, so that it can render stuff almost instantly, its probably due to a lack of memory :) Like those posh Flash menus that the Cybershot series never seem to get? We now have em :) There is an included flash theme with the phone, and removes all Vodafone branding :D except for the little live symbol in the corner, but I can manage with that :) The bottom of the screen, Is touch sensitive. This is cool for around 1 minute, but to be honest, i'd rather have the buttons, as, I always seem to nudge something and cancel what i'm supposed to be doing. When I upgraded, the saleswoman in the shop was like I love the touchscreen thing on it.... Its kinda cool, but i'm sure at times you'll be wishing you had your buttons back. On a big note. Most SE phones to my knowledge don't save the SMS messages to the memory of the phone, and store them somewhere where they impose a limit on the number you can have... Not this SE :D :D :D In message settings now, you have the ability to change the save location of the SMS messages to the phone's memory, or the Memory card. BIG BONUS, IMO. Another nice touch is the built in sensors on the device, that know that its sideways, or vertical. This is made use of in a few different apps on the phone, Including the media bit, and also the Marble Madness game that comes with the phone, whereby you control the device with the tilt sensors.... Overall Sorry I haven't included any camera images, but I will get some, and add them to the review. The Phone itself is very good, except for a few bugs that need to be ironed out, such as different bits and bobs with crashing. The good things are that SE have stepped up the game and added QVGA Video recording support, a 5.0mp Camera, and other additions, such as being able to support MicroSD and M2 memory cards! :) The phone will also support 8Gb MicroSD cards (Confirmed by me), so it could be used for a Walkman if you wanted so. I've probably missed loads out, so feel free to ask any questions. :) Im thinking about getting it as well mainly for the camera and mainly because im a little se fanboy but found useful info like video reviews and that at Sony Ericsson K850i if any children of the nokia can be swayed

Elliot B.
Nice review i really want this phone, gonna buy one end of month :D Why not get the Nokia N82? It's an N95 with a smaller screen but with a Xenon flash. The camera is better than the K850i's camera. Or perhaps even the older (but still technically better than the K850i) Nokia N95 itself? Same camera as the N82 (minus the Xenon flash) so it is again better in the day than the 850i and cameras-aside, both Nokias offer the following over the K850i: Screen size/quality (2.2" 262K vs N95 2.6" 16m colour) GPS Wi-Fi Symbian OS meaning a huge wealth of programs/applications/games etc. Better video recording (QVGA vs VGA (much, much better)) Video out On-board USB/phone jack etc. The battery life isn't as good on the N95 but the phone does much more and the N82 comes with a better battery than the N95. game_over
Just got this today and i totally love it... it looks amazing, the screen is crystal clear.. you can use it as a digital camera staight out of pocket, it has a button ontop of the phone to turn the camera on/off and the lens cover opens automatically with a spiffy blue glow around it. the touch screen is amazing, i didnt think i would like it but i think its much better than the buttons.. the media player is quality, no need for ipods with this. no cover on the back, everything just fits into the bottom. the only downsides IMO are.. the buttons, they are only small and take a little getting used to. the media player searches EVERY folder on your memory card and adds the photos or video's... i had a folder with 'hidden' photo's in that were for my viewing only... but the media player has picked them up and shows them at the push of a button, i'm going to need to remove these from my phone now incase someone decided to look through it... we should be able to select which folders it indexes. apart from that i love it, best phone i have had, highly reccomended. KitCh
Well I decided to flash my firmware on my K850i due to the fact that the current firmware from 3 was, well, how can I put this lightly...rubbish. So I flashed to the "K850i R1CA037 CID52 K850 1201-9794 CUSTOMIZED UK/ BLUE WESTERN-EUROPE" firmware and I've seen major improvements. Also, the same day, once I connected my mobile to SEUS I got a new update. So now I'm extremely happy with the mobile and I laugh at people who still have to suffer what I suffered for a few weeks. One thing I should point out is that this does void my warranty, but you are able to flash back to the original firmware if you ever need to take your phone in for repair :D But yeah. Finally it's a great phone that works flawlessly! Really happy with it.
game_over
whats improvements would you expect from flashing it and updating it? especially if ur phone is already working fine? only possible problem i have experienced since i got it this morning was when i attempted to call my voicemail it just kept saying 'opening contract information' but didnt move from this, even when trying to view my address book i got the same problem so i just restarted and its been fine since
KitCh
That's the thing, my phone wasn't working fine. Browsing the menu's, taking photo's, playing music etc. All of these features didn't work well with my mobile. After flashing / updating my firmware everything works 110% better. My mobile is alot more responsive and saving / taking photo's is alot faster and better quality (pics would be over exposed before I updated the phone). So to me personally, paying the little amount to get my phone flashed was totally worth it!

matthewf01
For you K850 owners out there, thought I should let you know that a new firmware was released yesterday/today, which resolves a LOT of bugs people have been experiencing with the phone. Also a few UI enhancements in there as well, which is always a nice treat :) Go download Update Service from Sony Ericsson's support website.
