gpister
Hello, I need help because my friend set a password and forgot it. I know there are couple of ways to bypass the password like to reset it or get in it with a program or get the password itself. If there is a thread please you can post about it. I would appreciate the help thank you. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/596311-bypass-password-for-windows-xp/ Share on other sites

Yusuf M. Veteran Posted October 25, 2007 Veteran Share Posted October 25, 2007 Hello gpister, Follow this simple guide to recover the account. Tell your friend to follow the starred steps if he or she is using the Welcome Screen feature to access Windows XP. Reset user password Power up your computer.* At the Welcome Screen, press CTRL+ALT+DEL twice.* The Classic Logon screen should appear. Type administrator as the Username and leave the Password blank. Click Start and then click Run. In the Open box, type control userpasswords2, and then click OK. Select the desired User Name and click Reset Password. Type a new password password in the New password and Confirm password boxes. Note: You may have to do this in safe mode. SkyyPunk Veteran Posted October 25, 2007 Veteran Share Posted October 25, 2007 If above dont work, use EBCD (emergency boot cd). It might be the same mentioned above. It's a linux boot cd with a built in password reset. It work for NT based OS's (like XP). Only issue is if anything was encrypted under the user, you cant access those files without the original password, but most people dont do that http://www.ebcd.pcministry.com/ Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/596311-bypass-password-for-windows-xp/#findComment-588943845 Share on other sites
drbobiii
One of my friends had to use this alternate method when he forgot the password to a system he hadn't used in a while. This is only necessary if the Administrator account is disabled (or unabled to be logged into). http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/pub0009...icle.asp?ID=305 Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/596311-bypass-password-for-windows-xp/#findComment-588943850 Share on other sites
Nashy
I didn't think Neowin allowed discussion about this sort of thing? Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/596311-bypass-password-for-windows-xp/#findComment-588943862 Share on other sites
dead.cell
I didn't think Neowin allowed discussion about this sort of thing? It's a fairly common mistake. Something of the sort once happened to me before as well, only it had to do with a logon skin which wouldn't accept my password for anything. [deXter]
Incase you want to find out the what the password is rather than resetting it (say for the purpose of recovering encrypted files), then you can use Ophcrack. It's a linux based livecd that will crack the passwords of your windows accounts. Since it uses a rainbow table, it's fairly fast and has good success rates. Kaidiir
OMG HAX. I've heard of that Linux boot CD for resetting a WinXP password...either that or logging in as admin and changing it that way should do it. whocares78
I didn't think Neowin allowed discussion about this sort of thing? about how to recover a forgoten password ??? it's not illegal! users are stupid they forget passwords. p.s. anarons way will only work if you never set an administrator password (which a lot of people don't seem to do)in which case your machine is so open to attack it's really not funny Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/596311-bypass-password-for-windows-xp/#findComment-588943967 Share on other sites
gpister
Thank you so much i swear to god i love guys from neowin:). You guys are really helpful thank you once again. I will try it when i go to my friends house he is sorta new with computers and i guess decided to put a password; i told him what an idiot he was to put a hard password that he couldn't recall. Once again thank you so much :D Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/596311-bypass-password-for-windows-xp/#findComment-588943972 Share on other sites
Tom Swiss
Boot up with system or cd which can support NTFS disk. Then go to winnt\system32\config\ directory. Backup *.sam files in it and then delete all of them. Reboot your computer from XP, can use administrator and leave password blank. Then you can log into the system again. Panacik
I didn't think Neowin allowed discussion about this sort of thing? I agree. about how to recover a forgoten password ???it's not illegal! users are stupid they forget passwords. Whilst not illegal in a MS type way where MS would sue, it would be illegal for someone to gain control of someones machine, even as a joke by using these methods. Also, i am sure there is a rule on Neowin of not teaching people how to circumvent security, weather it is security implemented by an IT department or security integrated in to Windows as standard. Whilst it is likely you are correct that the thread started is being truthful, there is always that chance that he will use this method for a more unlawful use. You're from the UK, you'll be well aware that PC World has a tool that allows them to reset your password when you send off your laptop for repair or you forget it. There are some really naive people on these forums. This forum should have a filter that lets you ignore children under the age of 16. markwolfe Veteran Posted October 25, 2007 Veteran Share Posted October 25, 2007 Victor, you are being extraordinarily harsh. Especially when you and Rich are in agreement that this password reset sounds perfectly legit. If this forum had a maturity filter, your post would likely have triggered it, as there is no need to be so rude in response to a calm, rational post. I was AGREEING that he probably is legit. The problem being that we have no way to tell without knowing the guy or seeing the machine etc. One of Neowins rules is to not be able to circumvent any policies in place on machines, even if it is a built in feature which may have gone wrong. This rule applies i believe to this and to things such as bypassing the password of a router. Even if the guy was to say he forgot the password to the router etc, we likely wouldn't supply any information to bypass as we have no proof he is legit. As for your comments as to how i work, i have no idea what that has to do with my business mind. However, if you really want to know, i have worked in IT for 7 years and have used computers since the age of 6, starting with a commodore 16. So im sure i have at least SOME knowledge of what im saying. I'm also nearly 26, so i am far from 16 mate. I'm also not aware that PC have a tool. I tend to avoid PC World like the plague, as its staff are usually very unhelpful, not usually the most technical of people (although you do get the odd person who knows a bit of what they are on about) and their products are usually very over priced compared to online prices.. You have an ignore button, so please use it. However if you are going to ignore posts like mine above, i expect you will be ignoring half the forums within a week  Victor, you are being extraordinarily harsh. Especially when you and Rich are in agreement that this password reset sounds perfectly legit. If this forum had a maturity filter, your post would likely have triggered it, as there is no need to be so rude in response to a calm, rational post. Thanks for the kind words Mark, much appreciated. It does strike me that a lot of n00bs who join the forums tend to start of a little harsh and seem to want to proove that no one else other than them knows what they are on about. Usually after enough people post telling them they are being rude, they start to realize that their knowledge is more than some and less than others, at which point they become more friendly.
