SoulEata
I've been receiving error code 8024402F from Windows Update, and I'm at my wits end! I've tried everything in all of the Google results - including upgrading my router firmware and I even tried it without my firewall on. Nothing. Help! HappyAndyK
Broadly speaking, you can try one or all of these : Run freeware CCleaner to clear up PC Junk. Also flush the Software Distribution Folder. Reboot. If you are using WindowsUpdate try using MicrosoftUpdates and vice versa. If it still doesnt help , then refer the Windows Update Error Codes. This will give you the direction in which you may have to look for the solution. Or check out the Micrtosoft Windows Update Solution Center. For more visit Troubleshooting Windows Update in Vista. HappyAndyK
Ok, the url redirect is normal. Did you try everything mentioned in the above-mentioned 'Troubleshooting Windows Update in Vista' link ? Well this zdnet link shows the frustration of Adrian Kingsley-Hughes, when he too encountered the same error. :D Closest someone has come to a solution for this, here at Microsoft Communities. SoulEata
Mabey leave it on over night and set it to install update automaticly at 2am... hopefully it will work for you. It was set like that. Then when I woke up the next morning I first noticed the error. disabled any services lately? I only went into services.msc once, when Microsoft told me to. Here is what they said to do (which hasn't worked, I responded, have yet to hear back) From the case log, I understand that when trying to update Windows, the error code 8024402F was encountered. If there has been any misunderstanding, please feel free to let me know.I also understand the inconvenience you have experienced. Please be assured that I will do my best to help you. Please be aware that these following steps may be similar as the suggestions on Help and Support page, but, they are more detailed. Could you please perform them step by step? This will prevent us from having to proceed with additional troubleshooting steps and provide us with feedback to further develop our support resolutions for future customers. Your assistance in the feedback process is greatly appreciated and crucial to creating the best support experience we can here at Microsoft. This issue can be caused by the following factors: 1. The Windows Update service has been stopped. 2. Corrupted Windows Update Temporary folder. In order to narrow down the cause of this issue and resolve it, please refer to the following steps. After finishing each step, please check the result again on the Windows Update website. NOTE: Some third party programs can affect the Windows Update service. If you are running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet or web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.), I recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down and then try accessing Windows Update later. Please understand that we are disabling these programs only for the purpose of troubleshooting and we can re-enable these programs after we finish troubleshooting. Step 1: Verify the relevant Windows Update services ======================================= 1. Click the Start Button, in Start Search box, type: "services.msc" (without quotes) and press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. 2. Double click the service "Windows Update". 3. Click on the "General" tab; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic" or "Manual". Then please click the "Start" button under "Service Status" to start the service. 4. Please repeat the above steps with the "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" service. You can also temporarily stop these services, restart the computer, and then start these services again. If any service is missing or cannot be stopped or restarted, please let me know. Step 2: Rename the Windows Update Softwaredistribution folder ================================================ This problem may occur if the Windows Update Software distribution folder has been corrupted. We can refer to the following steps to rename this folder. Please note that the folder will be re-created the next time we visit the Windows Update site. 1. Close all the open windows. 2. Click the Start Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories". 3. Right-click "Command Prompt", and click "Run as administrator". 4. In "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type in "net stop WuAuServ" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was successfully stopped before we try to rename the folder. However, if it fails, please let me know before performing any further steps and include any error messages you may have received when it failed. 5. Click the Start Button, in the "Start Search" box, type in "%windir%" (without the quotes) and press Enter. 6. In the opened folder, look for the folder named "SoftwareDistribution". 7. Right-click on the folder, select Rename and type "SDold" (without the quotes) to rename this folder. 8. While still in the "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type the command "net start WuAuServ" (without the quotes) in the opened window to restart the Windows Updates service. Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was successfully started. However, if it failed, please let me know before performing any further steps and include any error messages you may have received when it failed. has vista activated correctly? SoulEata
I am pleased to announced that after lengthy technical support from Microsoft, a solution has finally been found. I am posting everything Microsoft told me to do that has not already been included, in case it works for someone else. For me, it was the final solution that fixed this grievous error. Good luck to everyone else who has been suffering! These instructions comes from a series of e-mail correspondence from myself and Microsoft. Suggestion 1: Reinstall Windows Update Agent 3.0 ====================================== 1. Please download the file from the following link: http://download.windowsupdate.com/WindowsU...Agent30-x86.exe 2. Save the file to D: drive. 3. Click Start->Run, type: "D:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce" (without quotations) and then press Enter to install the Windows Update engine. There is a space between "D:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" and "/wuforce" Note: Please save the downloaded file to the D: drive, because the file cannot be launched directly from the C: root directory. Suggestion 2: Register Windows Update component ============================ 1. Click the Start Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories". 2. Right-click "Command Prompt", and click "Run as administrator". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. 3. Please enter the following command, and press enter. REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL You will get a "DllRegisterServer in wuaueng.dll succeeded" window. 4. Then, please move on to enter the following commands one by one. A success notification will be received after each command. REGSVR32 QMGRPRXY.DLL REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL REGSVR32 ATL.DLL REGSVR32 WUCLTUX.DLL REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL REGSVR32 WUWEBV.DLL REGSVR32 MSXML3.DLL REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL REGSVR32 DSSENH.DLL ----------------------------------- I understand that after reinstalling the update engine, the wucltui.dll and dssenh.dll file still cannot be registered. Regarding the wucltui.dll file issue, I would like to explain that it is normal and you can ignore the issue. Regarding the dssenh.dll file issue, from your screenshot, I noticed that the file cannot be verified due to incorrect digital signature. At this time, I suggest that we use System File Checker to recover the file: System File Check: ============== I suggest we try the steps below to check the system files. This step will check and replace the corrupt system files. 1. Click Start, please type ?CMD? (without quotation marks) in the Start Search bar and right click on the ?cmd.exe? choose ?Run as administrator? 2. The CMD command prompt windows will appear 3. Please type the following command and press Enter SFC /Scannow Note: System will take some time to scan for the system. 4. After scanning, please restart the computer and attempt to register the file dssenh.dll again. --------------------- This behavior may occur if one of the following factors is true: 1. Affected by third party programs. Particularly the security program. 2. Related system files corrupted. To troubleshoot this issue, I suggest we first temporarily uninstall the third party security program for test purpose. Then, please perform the following steps, and try to run Windows Update after each step. Step 1. Reset permission ============= 1. Please download the subinacl.msi file from the following link and save the installation patch onto the Desktop: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...finityDownloads 2. Please go to the Desktop and double click the downloaded file. 3. Please select the C:\Windows\System32 folder as the Destination Folder during the installation. Later we will use this tool to reset the permission settings on the current machine. 4. Click the "Start" Button, in the "Start Search" bar, type: "notepad" (without quotes) and press Enter. 5. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window: @echo off subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f @Echo ========================= @Echo Finished. @Echo ========================= @pause 6. After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose "Save" when you are prompted to save the file. Type "reset.bat" as the file name and choose "Desktop" from the left panel as the save location. 7. Refer to the Desktop and right click the reset.bat file, then choose "Run as administrator." 8. You will see a DOS-like window processing. NOTE: It may take several minutes, please be patient. When it is finished, you will be prompted with the message: "Finished, press any key to continue". Step 2. Configure to download and install update individually. ====================== 1. Click Start, type Windows Update in the Search bar, and press Enter. 2. Click Change settings. 3. Please choose the option ?Check for updates but let me choose whether to download or install them.? 4. Click OK to save the change. ----------------------------- In this case, the update issue is probably caused by the corrupt system files. In order to fix the files, please perform the steps below. It will require the Vista Install disk to perform the In-place upgrade. In-place upgrade ========== Though this operation will not remove or modify the installed programs and files, I still suggest that we backup the important files before doing this. In addition, we may have to reinstall the device drivers after this operation. Thank you for your understanding. 1. Start the computer and access Windows Vista. 2. Insert the Windows Vista DVD in the computer's DVD drive. 3. Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate: ? If Windows automatically detects the DVD, the Install now screen appears. Click Install now. ? If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps: a. Click Start, click Run, type Drive:\setup.exe, and then click OK. Note: Drive is the drive letter of the computer's DVD drive. b. Click Install now. 4. When you reach the ?Which type of installation to you want? screen, click Upgrade to upgrade the system files of Windows Vista. After that, please try to update again.
