GPU Upgrade

well you've got us for help. you've also got my experience of 7 years (13 to 20) of building pcs for myself and family and friends but mainly myself. :D

anyway RAID 0: i seriously doubt that a bios setting/s would make his 8800 as slow as it is. i speak of course from experience. the graphics card is just supposed to work when you plug it in and install new drivers. usually its because the psu is not supplying enough power (causing slowdowns or hanging) or an issue with the driver or even the card might be faulty.

Ummm, he's got a 6800 now. He said he got better FPS with his old P4. He upgraded the MB and CPU to a Q6600. Now tell me, what would cause that loss of FPS? To me, it sounds like a setting problem. It does not make since that a quad core would under preform a old P4. Right?

I think they are speaking about upgrading the bios and it may help boost your GPU performance of the 6800GS. It's not likely it will work but worth a shot if you are willing to try. As said earlier by Mustard, you are not receiving the performance you should be right now but I don't want to bring this offtopic from it's true intent.

Another vote for the 8800GT 512MB, but the 38xx series from ATI is a good alternative. Even the 8800GT 256MB, but I would not go less than those.

You may also want to list your power supply as that is an important factor in this too. I'm not sure of this but maybe your case listed as well, as some long video cards are problematic for some cases.

Before you buy the 8800 (that's what I'd buy. No ATi) move the 6800 to a different PCI-E slot to make sure it's going at 16x. Try this program.... GPU-Z download

It will tell you everything (including interface speed) about your video card.

To answer your question about brands. I'd stick with XFX, BFG, or eVGA. All 3 have lifetime warranties, but the BFG and XFX brands have exceptional customer service and their warranties cover 3rd party coolers and overclocking.

I hear that eVGA has also amazing customer service but does not provide the same warranty that BFG and XFX provide.

Also with the eVGA you have to ability to be part of the 90 day "Step Up" program that allows you to trade in your graphics card within the 90 day period for a newer graphics card and just pay the difference.

When you upgraded your CPU/Mobo/Ram, did you use the old OS you had installed, or did you format and start from scratch?

I'm not familiar with GPU-Z but like Sojirou says, it could be the cause of the problem. The 6800GS is still a decent card at medium graphics/resolution.

GPU-Z is the GPU version of CPU-Z

Interesting. Your pixel and texture fillrate should not be 0. Same with your clock speed. There might be a problem with your card. You might want to try RivaTuner to fine tune your card. RivaTuner

Here's mine...

I think thats a problem with gpu-z.

Yeah looks like a gpu-z problem to me, the software is still pretty new and has some problems.

While that may be the case, low FPS... weird readings from GPU-Z... the problem might be with the card it self... or some drivers.... I don't know.

This may be totatlly unrelated but my screen has been flashing lately, just a random blackout for a split second, then back to normal. Then, yesterday, out of nowhere my screen flashes, 4 clones of my desktop pop up in a grid, then it disappears. I don't fun any extra desktop software either, so no virtual desktop hotkey was hit or anything.

3870 is much better then 256MB 8800GT if wanna split the budget between the 2 but yeah.

What on Earth are you talking about?!

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardw...-preview-5.html

They both cost the same and yet they 3870's 3D performace pales in comparison to any of the nVidia cards.

I don't know what AMD/ATI were thinking, but they had better be getting ready to release some formidable GPUs, because the G92 already stole the show.

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku...manufacture=HIS - HIS 3870 @ $224.31

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku...xy%20Technology - Galaxy 8800GT @ 249.99

At only $20.00 difference between the two cards, I would choose an 8800GT. I really expected the 3870 to be quite a bit less expensive too...

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku...facture=Diamond - Diamond 3850 @ $189.99

The 3850 on the other hand is a bit more affordable. If they had the 3870 at current 3850 prices, I wouldn't even consider the 8800GT unless price was not an issue.

Yeah, my GPU has got to be dieing... I keep having random screen flashes and today my screen went completely BRIGHT green and would do anything, I still heard everything, just no video. I was only in Windows too, I wasn't playing a game or anything. Would underclocking my GPU help prevent some of that until I get it replaced?

You can try that. It might help.
