Shadow_Thief
Good for Blu-Ray, Hopefully this will boost PS3 sales as it is a powerful system. Does this mean Lord of the Rings has made its decision as well? morgs
well it's definitely over.. I don't see HD DVD coming back from this.. a true shocker no doubt.. their decision is hardly fueled by business sense..As I said, they wouldn't stay neutral for long.. I was pretty sure they would go HD DVD. ...What! I read through 3 pages for that response?!? What a crock of crap :p Just kidding. I'm kinda disapointed at this especially as i was backing HD-DVD. Then again I just bought a PS3 so this is about the best news i could get. I have to say though, I'm quite surprised that this wasn't announced at CES? Cormier6083
Thanks for playing HDDVD, no one will miss you. Except the HD-DVD diehards who won't let it go. And when I say diehard, I mean it with the most respect. I couldn't find a better word. :D And I don't blame them. If Blu-Ray lost, I would not want to let go either. JAbad28
Except the HD-DVD diehards who won't let it go. Im not a diehard but like it was said before if the prices of the movies drop to dirt cheap than I'm gonna start buying em lol. But none the less I will definitely be getting a Blu-Ray player in the future if it seems like it is now. There still are some good movies that are on HD-DVD and not on Blu-Ray. Quickstrike
I remain neutral in this battle. My LG combo drive has no bias on what HD format I end up using. Ayepecks
Except the HD-DVD diehards who won't let it go. I wouldn't consider myself a diehard although I purchased a HD DVD player when it was $99, I'm glad the war is over but unhappy with who the winner is for reasons explained in my first post in the thread on the previous page. I think a lot of people are upset for the same reason (or if they had a significant HD DVD library). Sethos
Just happy we're starting to see a possible end of this format war, few of my local retailers refuse to stock any of the High-definition format because there is no "Definite" - Soon i can start getting Blu-ray discs in my local store, instead of getting them online and waiting a week. Gavin001
Yes, and it seems the ONLY BD player that can be firmware-upgraded is the PS3. The Sony S300 and S500 can both me upgraded! Just burn the update to CD then put the CD in! Cormier6083
I feel bad about the whole fighting, and that so many people will lose their investment, I guess you could say, but I'm just glad that their is an end in sight to this whole war. NateB1
Wow. This is bad news. If Blu-Ray wins, the consumer will be stuck with Sony's inconsistant, expensive, DRM infested, proprietary format. Woo hoo! However, I still say that if Toshiba or another company release a $99 or less player for an extended period of time very soon, HD-DVD may still have a shot. No one outside of early adopters are going to buy a $400 player, especially with the sub-prime mess we are in. If Blu-Ray wins, it will probably remain a niche format if the prices don't come down quickly enough. The average consumer certainly won't buy a $400 player, or a piece-of-juck $300 player, or a game console to watch movies. They'll consider a $99 player, and the lower-middle class a $50 player. That's a far cry from today's Blu-Ray player prices. The Sony S300 and S500 can both me upgraded! Just burn the update to CD then put the CD in! And most consumers will know/want to do that right before watching a new movie. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/611316-warner-bros-to-back-blu-ray-dvd-format-exclusively/page/6/#findComment-589111753 Share on other sites
TDQuiksilver
Apparently, prices haven't matter too much to this point. That debate can still be laid to rest. Here's to another year of weekly Blu-ray sales domination. Joel
And the Samsungs, and the Panasonics, and the Pioneers, and the Sony standalones...Don't know about the Philips or the LG ones. Sharp *just* came out with theirs... Sony's PS3 updates have been much different because they add a lot of functionality. The Sony S300 and S500 can both me upgraded! Just burn the update to CD then put the CD in! It's amazing that pretty much everyone at avsforum, as an example, are all now going to wait for profile 2.0 players as current profile 1.1 players can't be upgraded (except for the PS3). Can they actually be upgraded to profile 2.0? TruckWEB
The Sony S300 and S500 can both me upgraded! Just burn the update to CD then put the CD in! Like I said in my other post, firmware update don't bring new hardware to your player. If the player is not able to do Profile 1.1 in hardware, a firmware update won't help.... And it will be the same when Profile 2.0 comes out. Not all Profile 1.1 player will be able to get updated. Julius Caro
BD is not inconsistent or any more proprietary than hd-dvd is (I wont even argue the DRM thing, you are.. right!). I can see a whole bunch of HDDVD players being returned. Not that it was that expensive to begin with. +StevoFC MVC Posted January 5, 2008 MVC Share Posted January 5, 2008 There is no reason at all to return HD DVD players because of this. They won't stop selling movies for it any time soon, and all of the HD DVD's people have in their collection won't stop working. I don't know why it's such a big deal. Right now HD DVD has a lot to offer, as does Blu Ray. People should still buy one, or both players. There really is nothing to lose other than your own entertainment by not buying the HD players.
