PS3 Media Server / Universal Media Server Guide

OK guys, SB24 is released.

This is a significant release because I have added my build of MEncoder instead of Sherpya's for the first time.

This MEncoder build has several advantages over the one we were using.

It produces colours more correctly, so you will probably notice that shows look slightly different (a little brighter and a little warmer) because in the past the colours were being warped during the conversion process.

It also marks a big improvement in the display of VOBsub subtitles, because in all previous builds that has been bugged.

It has better audio/video sync and along with other advantages it may also introduce unknown problems, and that is why it's going into this build instead of the official one first.

So with the disclaimer out of the way, enjoy testing

It depends on the movie and how it is coded. If it is "hard coded" then the subtitles normally can not be disabled, but "soft coded" can. Depending on "where" you get the movies, it should say.

Most of the anime I get is all hardcoded. If you really want to know if there are subs though, instead of just clicking on the file itself, you should have a folder named #Transcoded ( or something along that line ). Open it up, and then open the folder that your movie name is labeled. For anime, I normally have to choose the ASS/SSA undetermined, and it puts up english subtitles just perfectly. There will be other subtitles listed for other languages, as well as the other ways for your stream to be processed if it isn't working with the normal method. Very handy for certain movies.

I recently just had the ps3media server do a auto update... when did they put that function in? I opened it up, it said a newer version was available, and boom, got it. I haven't had any issues with it though before or after the update, and in fact, it has only gotten better. I no longer have issues with any 1080p movie I stream. Now, if only there is a way to get around cinevia and the muted audio after 20 mins on certain flicks... lol

Cool, thanks for explaining the subs in more detail. I was never quite sure why subs were showing up on some mkv's on not others, so that does explain it now.

And yeah, the whole Cinavia thing really is starting to become an issue, and one day last week I spent a good couple of hours trying to find a way to work around it, and then I realized I had a super easy solution to the problem, stream it through the XBox 360, which I had not streamed anything through for well over 2 years. So that was a relatively easy fix, but obviously only an option if one has a 360, and I still prefer to watch everything on the PS3.

DTS fixed, was busted in last build :)

So since the topic is of subtitles, something I still do not fully understand...

Do MKV's generally have subtitles built into them?

For whatever reason I have been watching a lot of foreign films lately, I also actually watched a Scottish film called NEDS and needed subtitles for it as their accent was just way to damn thick LOL and the only way I usually do subtitles is to have it autoload a sub file of the same file name. Every other option just seems hit or miss. So what am I doing wrong?

LOL, just noticed this. Damn that Scots accent, I watched the film fine

This build functions as the bleeding-edge testing version of PS3MS. Here you can find features and bugfixes before they are added to the official version, and sometimes ones that never will be. Using this build is mostly a way for you to see the newest developments and to help us by providing feedback.

How does one get the official build? These sub junk builds are a little wonky for me, most movies are working, but a few are not, I have not tried everyone but 30 and 43 both have issues here and there, so just curious how the official build fares. It may be I just have a few corrupt mkv's.

Their main page has a link to it, just click the Windows logo (should be v1.30.1):

Thanks. (Y)

I am not sure I have ever been to this site. Definitely not this design of the site, but I actually thought the home page was the site with the sub junk builds.:laugh:
