tunafish Posted January 27, 2008 Share Posted January 27, 2008 As i did have a problem like yours. Whereby all of a sudden and for no reason my LAN card decided not to work. It would go to limited connection and only allow me like local network access as such. I checked everything, replaced the cable, checked the router, rebooted it etc. Then i went in and checked the IP and subnet and gateway settings and it was like errr those are wrong. It had somehow decided to set it to a fixed ip etc which was the same as my router, so once i set it as DHCP settings and rebooted it worked fine. Might also be because you have both WIFI and LAN turned on at the same time, who knows. Could be getting confused there. Also could try a ipconfig /release and then /renew when plugged in as NIC. Nope couldn't care less about my post count. So to go over the problem... your onboard NIC was working fine... you take your old GFX card out you put the new one and it stops working.... seems odd why would a change of GFX card cause a problem....and even a format and reinstall of vista that you said you did didn't fix your problem. Unimatrix Xero Posted January 27, 2008 Author Share Posted January 27, 2008 the Ip settings are set to automatic, and no i dont have another gfx card to try ipconfig /renew brings up the error message: unable to contact DHCP server: operation timed out An error has occurred while releasing interface Loopback Pseudo interface 1: The system cannot find the file specified The IP address im getting is: 169.254.33.75, this is also happening when im on a direct connection to the modem (no router) so that knocks out the problem of the wifi and wired connection conflicting could this be the cause? Before you do that, do like someone suggested before and try a Linux Live CD. http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download Boot from CD and see if it can get an ip address. (assuming your router has a DHCP server running) If it doesn't, then you know its a hardware problem. :) And seriously, the fact that there are 4 pages worth of posts and only a couple of posts which are actually helpful is a worry.
