Pc_Madness
i have never used Linux Live in my life i wouldnt even know where to start, i will be trying that winsock command later on, i will report back when its been done Well, just burn it to a cd (the contents of the iso, not the iso itself :p), and tell your computer to boot from it. It should load up a nice gui, and in the top right hand corner will be a network icon. If theres no icon then chances are theres a problem thats hardware related since Ubuntu should configure it all for you. To double check.. in Preferences (control panel) or something there should be a Network Manager option or something, see if it lists eth0 (your NIC) and if its got an ip address. Then just shutdown and it'll eject the disc for you. Its not hard but if your not comfortable. :)

tunafish
This may sound dumb, but some motherboard bios allow you to turn off the built in NIC card. Make sure that it's enabled etc

+PeterUK MVC Posted January 28, 2008 MVC Share Posted January 28, 2008 if that dont fix it then the NIC is as everyone else said dead Dead...just by putting in a new graphics card...is this built in NIC a integrated part of the Chipset.
tunafish
The NIC sounds like it's part of the motherboard. But theres not alot else you can try. Now see the graphics card might not be the main problem, for example when he took the old one out, it could of knocked something on the board or shorted it out due to static or something. Normally i have found some bult in NIC cards to be kind of rubbish or sometimes a bit slow, but it's personal pref really.
DrivenDaily
I personally think its dead, but... If you go to Status --> Details does it show a MAC? And have you tried setting one manually?
