Today i picked up a Hp Mediasmart EX470 500 GB. Setup did not last long, installation software from HP included WHS Connector. The discovery process has produced an error. I did a lot of reading for the past few hours as i did try google. From the information i have found, leap year (feb. 29) created this same issue with people running the discovery dure to a clock sync problem. Now that that time has pass i still have this probelm. The error is not secific "This operation cannot be complte at this time try again later". I have read the Microsoft help suggetions, factory reset, turnd off firewalls (windows and router), router firmware update as well as unplugging all other network devices/restarting.I have a feeling it has something to do with my router, D-link dir-655 Gigabit N.

I have searched everywhere for a solution.

Help! plz!

ps. the lights on the front are blue and purple and i can ping the server from my pc. Vista home premium sp1

I made have figured out what it could be...i have my services set to Blackvipers SAFE Settings. What services are required to run WHS Connect???

Most likely it's a firewall error when I was in the WHS beta trying to get WHS to cooperate with my routers firewall and somewhat with the windows firewall. I'm guessing the discovery error you had was something related to UPNP which WHS uses to try to auto configurate your windows firewall and your routers firewall. It wall add port forwarding settings so you can access your WHS box from the internet. Check your router to be sure UPNP is enabled also check your services to see if the UPNP service is stopped.

The entry in your logs have NOTHING to do with your issue -- nothing!

Most soho router do not firewall lan to lan connections. Only wan to lan. So I highly doubt your routers firewall has anything to do with your issue. I would have to check that one to be sure.. but those entries in the logs you posted have NOTHING to do with lan to lan traffic.. An is simple typical internet noise..

edit: From a quick look at the emulator for the dir-655 I see no seetings for lan to lan firewalling.. Its firewall settings are basic to be sure..

Also you have no need of UPnP for WHS to function correctly on your lan..

As to what services are required for the connector to work.. What services have you disabled??

either dump your services using SC, or grab the free tool from joeware

I cannot get that tool to work, flashes on my screen for like a tenth of a second, trying to screen grab my disabled services but i can get print screen/paste to work. All i can say is check here and see what i have disabled. Thanks for your help Budman. I got HP working on my problem to, sent the a error report and now im witing for a call back. I don't have any other computers on my network. Just a 360 elite and a ps3. and they work as media servers.

edit: for some reason i don't have the snippet tool on my vista home premium.

to run that tool you need to be in a command prompt first.. you can not just use run an expect to see anything..

But since your dumping the output to a file.. that file should of been created anyway..

I just verified that the tool works fine on vista fine..

Got to a command prompt first, before you type in the command I gave ;)

Get a pretty black box where you can do all kinds of magic ;)

Well I have WHS running at home, an have a vista machine I can play with.. So I can take a look at what you have not runnnig/disabled/etc. an see for starters if I can duplicate your problem.

EDIT: btw HP tech had me disable SPI and QoS on my router. In case that could equate to your testing.

In Internet Explorer open your Internet Options and in your LAN settings make sure "Automatically detect settings" is unchecked. I don't know why but this has to be unchecked for you to connect properly.

I will try an install to my vista machine tonight -- If you are not running a proxy on your network.. autodetect should return nothing.. Only if there was a proxy running on your network should that setting have any effect.

But I am fairly sure that it installed to my kids laptop running vista just fine.. An since we do not use IE.. that setting more than likely was/still is set to autodetect.

I just shot over some mkv files via copy/paste to the server and got around 3MB/s wireless. I was expecting around 12MB/s. Is this the proper way to transfer files to the server, i'm still a first time user of WHS, there sure isnt much to it for taking up 20GB . Why doesn't the WHS interface support clear type?...the text it all jagged.

EDIT: I cannot get a network map. Windows cannot start mapping on the adapter...how do i fix this?

Ummm what exactly do you expect to MAP?? :rofl:

Where would you have gotten the idea that you should be seeing 12MB/s ??? Usable bandwidth on a G network is only about 23-4Mbits tops.. Now do a rough /8 to give Bytes an your looking at about 3 MB/s If that is what your seeing your pretty much maxed out for 802.11G.. You stated your using a N router -- what about your wireless card? Is it N? What does it show you for your connection speed? Is the WHS server wireless? Is it N as well? Even at N speeds, doubt you would see 12MB/s file copies -- sorry! You would have to be well over 100mbit connection to see those kinds of speeds.. Even a wired 100mbit normally you will only see about 9-10 MBytes per seconds. Move to wired Gig if you want those kinds of transfer speeds.

Its quite possible if you are not using WPA2 you might not be able to get a N connection, even if both router an card support it.. There was just a thread about that recently.

if you want to transfer files to your WHS as fast as possible -- use a wire, that router of yours states its switch ports are GIG. Then your bottle neck would more than likely be your hard drives vs wire. Then your going to be in the 20 to 30MBytes per second most likely.

The Server is wired, my network card is an Intel Wireless Wifi Link 4965AGN connected mode 11ng at a rate of 130Mbps, WPA2. I do know that a wired connection would be faster, tried it and it was steadey at 9ishMbps. Did 2 different file transfers wirelessly, first was at 3mbps second was hovering around 1.3Mbps.

As for the network mapping, i figured i would at least be able to map my router, pc, server, ps3, and 360.

BTW, how do i move files from my 360 and ps3 to my server?

also wondering about remote streaming, is that a feature of this server? I had a buddy download a file off my server, got 22.7kbps which i thought was slow but could stream audio. maybe video with some tweaking.

Um where are you looking for a network map exactly.. WHS does not have any network mapping feature?? Do you mean on Vista?

Why do you think it should show any of that stuff, do all of those devices/OS support the LLTD protocol?

Windows Vista includes the software components that implement the LLTD protocol. For other devices on the network to be displayed on the map, they must enable a discovery protocol that can respond to the mapping requests from the Windows Vista-based computer.

Notice it can not place any of the machine not running LLTD, p4-24g is an XP box - but I installed the responder for testing.. It is missing my tivo, slingbox, it is missing my network printer, its missing a shared printer off the kidsdell, etc.. etc.. The sean-pc that it shows is my sons vista laptop.. If it was running xp I highly doubt it would of placed the wireless accesspoint on their either.

Not sure what exactly this eye candy is suppose to do for the user?? Lets say you have even 20 devices.. What you can not figure out that they are all connected to your switch(es) an or wireless router/accesspoint?

To be honest I don't see how the home network has any use for this type of eye candy.. Most any user that would even want to look at this is going to be on a flat network, ie one segment.. With maybe a router, switch an accesspoint.

What exactly is the point of the map??? What to show you your computer is connected to your switch, which is then connected to your router. :rolleyes: Come On -- your kidding you need a map to figure that out ;)

But now i see that it does not provide any real information...Now i i could get those files working on my ps3....i would be happy. I have no idea why they worked on my vista laptop as a media server and not my media server as a media server. Mp3s work great, skipping tracks is instant thats to the wirded connection, but geeez, all my divx and television show are corrupt, please! ;)
