+Fahim S. MVC Posted March 9, 2008 MVC Share Posted March 9, 2008 Is it possible to run a machine with no processor fan - it won't be overclocked. Can this be done with a Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad? If so, what sort of heatsink?
halflife
is it possible...yes is it stupid...absolutely there is no reason to leave off the fan over a CPU, considering its the most important part of a computer, especially with the quads. they get massively hot even with fans. bloodrain
better question is why would you even consider this? surely cant be because of the extra $.09 cents a month it costs to run the fan. If the fans too loud, just buy an ultra quiet cheap on off newegg.
+Fahim S. MVC Posted March 9, 2008 Author MVC Share Posted March 9, 2008 better question is why would you even consider this? Even ultra-quiet fans make some noise. Moving parts do, full-stop. I was thinking that given that fanless graphics cards are also available (and GPUs get very hot too), if there was a fanless solution for the CPU. uniacidz
There are solutions but they are big http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_p...roducts_id=4142 http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_p...roducts_id=5207 Otherwise watercooling is the go, but even that isnt perfect. Still here something from the radiator cooler or pump.
+InsaneNutter MVC Posted March 9, 2008 MVC Share Posted March 9, 2008 Checkout the Scythe Ninja-PLUS it could be what your after depending on your processor. It is huge, So be sure it will fit in your case! As with all fanless coolers, use of the Ninja is restricted by the type of CPU you are intending to use with it. We recommend using this cooler fanless if your CPU is a Pentium 4 Northwood (any speed), or an Athlon 64 3500+ or lower. If you intend to use the cooler with a socket 775 processor or a CPU faster than an Athlon 64 3500+ then we recommend you install the supplied 120mm fan. The Ninja-PLUS is supplied with two retaining clips and a 120mm fan for use with a high-end CPU, like Intel?s and AMD?s new dual core processors. omganinja
Wtf, do you people think before you post? There are plenty of fanless CPU Coolers, you could pretty much run a c2d with the stock heatsink without a fan, it'd shorten the life of the chip but no one uses a CPU til it dies these days anyway. The above quote is pretty much bull****, a P4 runs a hell of a lot hotter than a c2d. Any of the following would be fine without a fan: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835185038 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835233003 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835887002 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835200035 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835185046 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835154001
+Fahim S. MVC Posted March 9, 2008 Author MVC Share Posted March 9, 2008 I don't understand why they are saying go fanless with a P4 but not with a socket 775 based chip. Surely thre newer chips are much cooler than the likes of the Prescott!
omganinja
Just unplugged the fan on my zalman 9700 and the temps didnt change at all when idle, sitting at about 56c on full load, which is also the same as with the fan on.
KeeperOfThePizza
I would never go fanless, its too risky. Kinda like playing with fire.
Vlad
I would never go fanless, its too risky. Kinda like playing with fire. Yeah, fire that automatically distinguishes itself before it burns you...
GrimReeper
Going fanless without overclocking and good case cooling is perfectly fine and isn't "playing with fire". Its only impractical if you are trying to put it on a gaming rig or something that will run hot, under constant load even with good cooling. Check out SilentPCReview .fahim if silent computing is what you are after.
Mindovermaster Global Moderator Posted March 10, 2008 Global Moderator Share Posted March 10, 2008 anyone hear of passive cooling? the Accelero Rev 2 cools a gfx card nicely... I would suggest a Noctua fan with your cpu heatsink.
KeeperOfThePizza
Yeah, fire that automatically distinguishes itself before it burns you... You know what I mean.
Invizibleyez
Yeah, fire that automatically distinguishes itself before it burns you... What he meant to say is: "Yeah, fire that automatically extinguishes itself before it burns you..." I never saw a fire distinguish anything. sundayx Veteran Posted March 11, 2008 Veteran Share Posted March 11, 2008 I duno man, but my PC with a E6750, 2600XT and an Antec case runs perfectly silent, and there isn't any ambient noise in my room too.
