Everything is much snappier, in a noticable way. Start-up time, deleting applications, the web browser, loading Search etc. :D

With phones is it generally recommended you upgrade? You know, how people advise against upgrading there PSP etc because it removes/blocks stuff...

I'm getting a black n95 in a week or so and would like to know whether I should be upgrading or not!

I see no reason to not use up-to-date firmware.

And what about custom programs? I have a small collection of apps and games I'm going to put on it already :p Could these **** it up?

Backup everything on your phone and/or memory card as it may wipe one/both but all applications will continue to work.

Disturb3d if the N95 you?re getting has a branded version of the firmware from o2, Orange or whoever you must likely won?t be able to update to the latest firmware.

I had to de brand mine as the latest version of the o2 firmware was v12 for me, yet the generic Nokia firmware is v21 now!

My mate made this guide which I found very useful: http://digiex.net/guides-tutorials/100-nok...ding-guide.html

Some useful apps for the N95 I have are:

Core Player

Divx Player

Nokia's Internet Radio App

Moving Ball (just an example to show off the phones motion sensor)

Nokia Sports Tracker (can log where you travel using GPS then display it on Google earth)

Sic Ftp

Rotate Me

Sym Torrent

SYMBT Chat (Bluetooth chat)

Windows Live

Games:

C2 Doom

KRally

Picodrive (Megadrive Emu)

Skyforce

Skyforce Reloaded

Snakes

SuperMiners

Vbagx (GBA Emu)

Vboy (Gameboy Emu)

Updating now, thanks for the heads up, hopefully this fixes the constant crashes I get after the last firmware.

So annoying that answering a call could cause it to crash, people were thinking I was being rude.

Yeah i got this a few days ago, performance wise and visually i cant tell the difference compared to v20 but internet browsing and the media player seem more detailed

A new firmware is coming out these next days for the N95 8GB as well with many additions including rotate screen using the build accelerometer.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've just got the 8GB a few days, tried the Software Updater today but it would only let me install v15. Does this mean I need to debrand to be able to update to v21?

I've found that here, in Australia, Nokia will upgrade your firmware for you, and if you like, they can put the generic firmware at a Nokia Care Centre.

I haven't been there to do that though, but while I was there getting a headset fixed, I heard somebody asking for generic firmware.

Should be free if you're still under warranty.

^ There isn't a Nokia shop where I live, generally only service providers and 'Carphone Warehouses'. It sucks :p

But .KICK.. when a product code has been changed, can it be changed again after that? Would this void any warranty etc?

Yes you can change it back :) I don't think it voids any warranty but I am not sure !

It does void your warranty if you change the product code I think (like if you change it from Vodafone to Generic which I did), and changing it back is easier said than done.

You can change it back, but then you'll need to be able to upgrade to a new firmware of the other product code or else your firmware gives away that you've changed product key. You can't "upgrade" to an older version either... that'll brick your phone.
