Mrs_Angel_D
Ok here's the thing I bought my computer on the 10th of February refurbished from tiger direct it's a Gateway GM5478 after experiencing some issues I decided to do a reformat and wipe it all clean. When I received the computer It came with a vista operating disk this is what I used to reformat. During the process I noticed that I had two partitions on my hard drive I initially wiped the 10gb partition and installed the os there(not having much experience with partitions) but then afterwards I realized what I did was wrong. I think all my system drivers where on that partition. So I ran through the reformat process again because now I noticed that my sound/network/t.v. tuner drivers had not installed. So during the second reformat I just decided to delete the partition and just do the install. Once I did that I removed my pci modem and put in another network card I had a realtek which installed plug and play so I then had internet access. From this point I went through the windows update process and updated all the way to sp1. Once I had internet access the computer installed Microsoft drivers for my sound. But my built in network card still had the yellow explanation point. Well after doing some research I used belarc advisor found my pc's original serial number then found my computer on their website and downloaded all the available drivers they had. I installed the Sigmatel audio drivers, which fixed a problem of my front microphone jack not working. Installed the network driver, which fixed my network card. Installed my T.V. Tuner driver (of which I found using Driver Agent). The only thing left and the one that scares me to install is the Intel ViiV driver. I mean what if I screw something up and will this fix my SM Bus error? How can I be certain that this driver is the proper driver for my system. I attached the readme.txt that comes with the Intel ViiV driver. I'm just looking for some advice from someone who knows a bit more about this stuff than me so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much in advance, Angel P.S. An automatic search for the driver comes up empty. readme.txtFetching info... Mrs_Angel_D
Ok right after making this post I did a google search for the phrase "What is an SM Bus Controller" (odd I missed this before when doing the same search) and came up with this page at the intel website. I followed their instructions and downloaded the utility and ran it a woohoo it fixed the problem no more yellow exclamation point in my device manager!! except for the pci simple communications controller. When I do an automatic search for it windows tells me to "Download and install the driver for Intel Management Engine Interface from the manufacturer's website" is that the Intel Viiv software maybe? anyway at least maybe this post can help someone else whose facing the same issues I had. But still My question remains about the Intel Viiv drivers, what exactly are they and should I install them??? eilegz
it depends on what hardware you have, sometimes its intel other times its texas instruments among others. try to use everest or something to identify your hardware so you can get the driver for it Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/628650-sm-bus-controller-question-mark-in-device-manager/#findComment-589302182 Share on other sites

flavioe
No, "Intel Management Engine Interface" is one of the vPro drivers you can download it from Intel's site.
