Is there a command that'll allow me to run in failsafe graphics mode? I'm having a terrible time installing my ati card. (Ubuntu 8.0.4)

I have the same problem. So far it won't work with it.

Boot up in Recovery mode by pressing the Esc key when the grub is loading and choose the second option then when the DOS style menu shows up choose Xfix and then resume bootup and at the sign in window go to the menu at the bottom left of the screen and choose Failsafe Gnome mode.

Well, do what I had said BEFORE it gets that far.

Okay so I got my card to install and I have my native res (1920x1200). Now.. When I go to apply the "extra visual graphics" my system locks up... I believe this is the cause...

You're suppose to install Xserver-xlg as well through Synaptic. Plus, Compiz-Fusion only works with the accelerated video drivers installed.

BTW, to make sure that you have an accelerated driver installed go to the screen saver section and try a GL screen saver and if it is fast you did it right.

lol i cant even get into ubuntu now. i appreciate your help but i think im just gonna get rid of ubuntu and downgrade to 7.10 for awhile until the bugs are gone.

Thats what i've done :)

I'll wait for like 8.10 or something till they've really sorted it out
