Tornado Siren - What does it mean.

Recommended Posts

Ok so it is 4:27 AM here and the tornado siren is going off intermitently. Does the siren go off if someone spots a storm capable of a tornado, or if there is a tornado. And does it stay on during the whole duration of a warning, and if it goes off, is it safe to go back upstairs. It stopped once, I tried going back to bed, but then it went off again.

Edit: It is going off again but the storms look like they've left, one county above mine.

I suggest to de-activate/ remove the alarm. Those are only effective for people who believe (even vaguely) in prevention. If your first instinct when you hear a tornado siren is to post on an internet forum, you need to re-evaluate your priorities.

Amen!

Sirens mean HEAD TO THE BASEMENT!! Do not pass go - Do not stop and ask questions on an internet forum!

Anytime you hear a tornado siren, a funnel or tornado has been spotted in the area. Immediately go to your basement. If you do not have a basement, then head to the center room in your house, probably a bathroom or closet and stay there.

Anytime weather is perfect for a tornado or your area is under a warning, get dressed, put your tennis shoes on, get your wallet and credit cards, and any medicine you may need. If half of your house is destroyed or for some reason you are evacuated right away due to a gas leak (which does happen), you'll have important items on you.

Flish and I lived in North Dakota and now Nebraska. Trust me on this. lol

Oh, and if you are ever driving while the sirens go off and you are in a city, pull into the first open place you find. My sister and I got stuck like this once and I pulled into a KFC and we had to stay in the bathroom with everyone, lol. BUT at least we weren't in the bad weather anymore.

It means the demonic dimension from Silent Hill is coming. Get your gun!

Seriously, though, it means a funnel has been sighted nearby and you should seek shelter immediately.

As an aside, there are three levels of tornado warning, IIRC: tornado watch, which means that conditions are right for a tornado; tornado warning, which means that a funnel has been sighted but hasn't touched down; and tornado alert, which means a funnel has touched down and you should seek shelter immediately.

Basically when the Tornado Sirens sound, it means the Weather Service has issued a Tornado Warning for the county, were you live in. A tornado can be indicted from a radar or a spotter seeing the indication of a tornado forming. I have had a few come close to my house, just in the last two months.

its known that sometimes 'lightening' can set them off...but why 'second guess'...living in Oklahoma..I know the damage a tornado can do..so take your precautions...then worry about it later...most warnings only give you a few minutes to take cover.

Since we don't get tornadoes that often around here, we use the sirens to help with emergencies, like if in one area there is a volunteer fire department, they blow the siren to help gather people in case there is a major fire somewhere. This town I think has had one tornado in the past 100 years. lol

Best response in this thread. :p

Anyways when the sirens go off in your town it means a tornado warning has been issued for your county. As of this year though they're redoing how they issue warnings and if you watch the news they now draw out exactly which parts of counties the warning is most important to.

For here when the sirens go off that means the NWS has issued a warning and you should head to your basement or other safe place, or just stand outside and look around like half the people here tend to do. <_< Listen on tv or radio for when the warning is set to expire. During the warning you may here the sirens go off occasionally due to there actually being a tornado spotted, or in my case they didn't turn off for quite a while irronically 1 year and 1 day ago when a tornado went through my town. Then after the NWS has issued an all clear, or the warning has expired, the sirens will go off again to let everyone know.
