Mac OS X Snow Leopard Discussion

Recommended Posts

What Windows 7 promo page? Frankly, I'm really glad MS isn't talking about Windows 7 too much. When you go on about the features your new OS can do, but then don't deliver those features, it lets everyone down. I would much rather be surprised then let down.

I guess Microsoft may end up doing the above even if they are not saying it one way or another at the moment. Either way - Apple will probably pull this off just fine. Especially since they are making claims that include numbers... they kind of have to deliver on that.

Interesting. Well I can still see where they're coming from putting it in the server version first over the home user.

At any rate, nice to see them making OS X slimmer and faster.

If they're putting ZFS in the server version then it's going to be supported in every version. It may not be the default file system, but you'll be able to select it.

Awesome! They are doing what they should have done in Leopard. Removing all Aqua elements from toolbars. Gel and metal just doesn't fit together.

Well, I must admit I'm feeling kinda stupid here.

I was told specifically by PR that there were not copies of SL given out at WWDC and yet here they are. Wow, egg on my face. :p

I think the idea of Snow Leopard is great. Mac OS X, at this point in time, is feature-rich enough (on an end-user standpoint) for the time being. Taking a break to focus solely on speed, stability, reliability and optimization (instead of cramming in more stuff) is a fantastic idea.

Liking the sound of Snow Leopard a lot. Like Leopard, but smoother and quicker - what's not to like?! I hope its not an expensive update though..

Activity monitor sure looks like Task Manager which they were trying to make fun of during the iPhone demo. Silly Apple always trying to start a fight.

I'm willing to pay the full $129 as long as Apple fulfils their promises of a leaner, meaner Leopard.

They were talking about the iPhone there. Not desktop.

Yes, I know. Scott Forstall compared the iPhone (it's core is based on Mac OS X) to a Windows Mobile phone.

At current there is no reason to think that 10.6 will be any different than any other major 10.x revision, I would expect a $129 price tag. :)

I mean despite the improved performance, its gonna be a bit of a hard sell for Apple marketing to try and communicate to mom and pops why this upgrade is going to be worth the 129 price tag isn't it?

Well for them I doubt they'd need it if they're anything like my folks

Take this, I use my MacBook for all my work, College and Jobs in webdesign and photoshopping. OS 10.6 will be a good investment for me as performance is something that's always going to improve work flow. Hence why I'm buying an iMac

My Mum uses her iMac for Photos, blogging, music and a little bit of "Bean" (word processing), So her Mac runs lightning fast anyway so it wouldnt be worth it for her, she probably wouldn't even see a difference.

My Mums other half uses the same iMac for his business in the Photography industry and relies heavily of a mixture of Photoshop and Aperture. So for him it's plain simple justifiable.

What I guess i'm trying to say is we all have different needs and uses for our computers, so yes, Apple should release 10.6 as a full new version and sell it at it's full price tag simply because they can. If apples key selling points for this release are Speed and Stability then for me it's already sold, but for others, no way in hell.

Once its done? No. Keep in mind that the feature lists you are seeing right now are from a pre-beta version of the OS, once all is said and done Snow Leopard isn't going to be a 10.5.x calibre update.

SAN FRANCISCO?June 9, 2008?Apple? today previewed Mac OS? X Snow Leopard, which builds on the incredible success of OS X Leopard and is the next major version of the world?s most advanced operating system. Rather than focusing primarily on new features, Snow Leopard will enhance the performance of OS X, set a new standard for quality and lay the foundation for future OS X innovation.

It'll end up being like 10.1, hopefully its a free upgrade. I will not pay 130 for a service pack.

Just for the record, what did 10.1 include over 10.0? Is it the same calibre of (what's posted about) Snow Leopard?

Yeah, sounds like it. A load of performance enhancements, ColorSync 4, DVD playback, Image Capture, better burning, AppleScript, printers and 3D.

Thing is though 10.6 isn't fixing an issue that existed. The issue with 10.0 was that it sucked. Leopard doesn't suck IMO.

I'm with you on this PureLegend. Tiger -> Leopard was a very fair $129, and to be frank i've always been riled at the people who equate each 10.x increment with nothing more than a paid service pack. Anyone who actually uses the new version over the old one can quite clearly see the difference!

But I think most users will be spitting teeth if Snow Leopard comes out as quickly as it is supposed to, and is purely there as an exercise in trimming the fat out of the existing product. I can see it retailing at $129, but there should be a decent discount for current Leopard users IMHO.

But yeah, the OS is very laggy and needed these optimizations bad. So I'm really looking forward to it. Just when you resize a window, you can see that it's laggy, compared to Windows.

I've never had any trouble resizing a window in Leopard.

On 2.4Ghz 4GB MBP, old core duo 2.0Ghz 2GB MBP, and even older 17" 1.86Ghz iMac its fine.

I've never had any lagging in Leopard.

That being said, hopefully if 10.6 really is 64bit only it will help push Adobe to make CS5 (or maybe 4) 64bit for mac.

We could only hope. AE neeeeeds 16TB of RAM :)

This is impossible. On any Mac I've tried, the corner of the window really doesn't stay with the mouse. It's slower than the mouse, you have to look carefully and this happens when you resize at a fast speed. We don't see that in Windows, meaning that OS X's GUI is slower to refresh. I think it's better in Leopard (though I haven't tried Tiger in so long) but it still does it. 10.6 will be a welcomed update here, even if it comes at a price.

But if they added all this in 10.1 and it was free, then maybe we have chances.
