Classics for free

Metropolis Software released their point & click shareware adventure game called Teen Agent as freeware. The game can be downloaded from http://www.metropolis-software.com/downloa...een-english.exe

Ah, so they still have the file on their server.. I was afraid Metropolis Software had discontinued offering the game.

I can't, however, find a way to this file from their homepage.. am I just blind?

Well, you can always try http://www.scummvm.org - they have some nice adventure games for free. None by Sierra though.

Sierra have not yet released any of their "Quest" adventure games for free, thus if you are downloading them without owning the originals you are in violation of their copyright.

Sierra has, to my knowledge, released the following titles for free:

Johnny Castaway (screensaver)

Betrayal At Krondor (RPG)

Red Baron 1 (flight sim)

Mystery House (Apple II adventure game, now lost to time)

Tribes 1 and 2 (tactical collaborative FPS)

Caesar (empire-building game by Impressions)

None of these are actually available on Sierra's website anymore (Tribes was released on FilePlanet), but if you come across them they're legal to download.

Sierra designer Al Lowe has also released some of his early games for free, but he has no official permission to do so.

There are some fanmade remakes of Sierra adventures over at http://www.agdinteractive.com/

Mystery House (Apple II adventure game, now lost to time)

Actually, you can download Mystery House from the If-Archive & its mirror site. The main download for Mystery House is at http://www.ifarchive.org/indexes/if-archiv...esXappleII.html , just look for mystery.dsk.

The mirror sites for If-Archive are at http://www.ifarchive.org/ .

Great, thanks for the info and link! I'll add this to the Sierra entry when I update the top post next time.

Crosscut Games last month released their role playing construction kit called Runesword 2 as open source. Runesword 2 is a role playing construction kit which allows you to create your own RPG adventure which you can share. Runesword 2 comes with 2 adventures. The Runesword 2 page is at http://www.runesword.com/rs2.html . Here is a little bit of history. Runesword 1 was released as freeware during 2000, Crosscut games released Runesword 2 in 2001 but your had to pay for Runesword 2. Runesword 2 was finally released as open source last month. If you can't run Runesword 2, you can download Runesword 1 which is freeware at http://www.runesword.com/rs1.html .

Crosscut Games has released their 2 commerical Apple 2 titles which were sold as commerical software during the 1980's as freeware. The games are Bronze Dragon: Conquest of Infinity & Dragon Side II: The Twisted Speare. These 2 game downloads are at http://www.runesword.com/bd.html .

Scott Adams (not the Dilbert creator. This Scott Adams is the creator of games such as Pirate Island, Voodoo Castle. Scott Adams was the creator of the game company called Adventure International which produced mainly text adventure games). Well, Scott Adams has released a windows version of his old commerical text adventure games & the download is at http://www.msadams.com/downloads.htm .

is there a new version of Conquests Of Camelot??? i have the older one and boy the graphics are cack!!, if anyone knows of where i can get another version with better graphics i would be very greatful. Its good to know Sierra has took time to make some of their older games with better graphics.

Also i found a new version of Maniac Mansion another classic game :D

I almost forgot about this. Ian Bell released the commerical game called Elite several years ago as freeware. Elite is a space trading/mercanary game which was programmed by Ian Bell & David Braben. Elite was published on many systems (mainly during the 1980's). You can download these releases from http://www.iancgbell.clara.net/elite/game.htm . There was also demo releases of Elite for Sega Genesis, Nintendo Gameboy & Atari 8-bit which can be downloaded from http://www.iancgbell.clara.net/elite/archive/index.htm .

While I'm on the subject. I think that it would be great to add a link to the front page for the Retro Remakes site which is located at http://www.remakes.org/ . Retro Remakes is one the biggest sites dealing with remakes of classic games. Retro Remakes has remakes for GBA, Gameboy, Amiga, PC (Dos, Windows, linux, et al), Palm, Mac, et al.

Thanks for all the great links this far. Some of them will make it into the top post when I have some time to really look it over and update it.

FYI, the Maniac Mansion Deluxe (an awesome remake!!!) can be downloaded from LucasFan Games.

I just remember the game called Joyous Rebel. Joyouse Rebel was sold as shareware by Scott Hagg but he released the game as freeware during 1999. Joyous Rebel is an RPG & It can be downloaded from http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/2805/download.htm . I played the shareware version during 1996 or 1997 but I never got far into the game (I downloaded & played it again when it got released as freeware but I never got far into the game).

Pasi Laaksonen has released his Amiga shareware games as freeware. You can download his shareware games which are ZapTris, FunTris, Mine! and Mato & you also need to download the registration keys to these programs & the games/registration keys are at http://www.tiikoni.net/amiga/ .

FYI, the Maniac Mansion Deluxe (an awesome remake!!!) can be downloaded from LucasFan Games.

I downloaded Maniac Mansion Deluxe several days ago & I played part of it this morning. I will have to agree with you, Maniac Mansion Deluxe is an excellent remake of Maniac Mansion. The graphics, music/sound are excellent.

Now if only a group of programmers would remake Loom & Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade (The Graphic Adventure) & I would be real happy.

I just read on several web sites that a programmer named Bill Appleton released his 1986 game creation system for the Macintosh called WorldBuilder as freeware in 1995. I saw this listed at http://we.got.net/~mapman/wb/wbinfo.html , http://we.got.net/~mapman/wb/wbinfo.html & http://members.chello.at/theodor.lauppert/games/wbuilder.htm . Worldbuilder is a black & white game creation system for the Macintosh. You can find downloads on the websites which I mentioned but you can also download it from http://www.ifarchive.org/if-archive/progra...g/worldbuilder/ .

http://www.ifarchive.org is an excellent resource for Interactive Fiction, aka Text Adventure games. Ifarchive contains freeware, shareware text adventure games. They even contain shareware/commerical text adventure games which have been released as freeware.

Mark J. Welch released his shareware text adventure game creation system called Adventure Game Toolkit as freeware in 1993. Info & downloads are at http://www.markwelch.com/agt.htm . Downloads of AGT are also at http://www.ifarchive.org/indexes/if-archiv...ammingXagt.html

Clickteam released the source code to the game programming languages AMOS (Amiga) & Stos (Atari ST) as freeware several years ago. You can read/download the source code from this link which is at http://www.clickteam.com/English/amos.php

DCGAMES is a shareware RPG game creation system for DOS. The page on the author's site at http://www.dcgames.com/dcgdownload.htm claims that DCGames no longer requires registration to be paid. Please feel free to download it.

Mark Hughes released his shareware JAVA RPG construction kit as open source. Delver used to be shareware & Delver is located at http://kuoi.asui.uidaho.edu/~kamikaze/Delver/ . http://www.ambrosine.com/resource.html listed Delver as shareware because it used to be shareware.

@EugeneE3RD, thanks for the great lists! As AMOS might be a little hard to port to PC (it was written in 680x0 assembly, just like Alien Breed 3D II which also had its sources released but never ported), users wanting to try AMOS might want to get Amiga Forever (a commercial licensed Amiga emulation package from Cloanto) and then download all the AMOS entries from Back2Roots at this location:

http://www.back2roots.org/Tools/Files/?find=amos

@antheus - Yes, the new Zak and Maniac Mansion games are free downloads. Enjoy!

Thanks! :D

As for the first question: the info about Factor 5 working with CAPS came from a CAPS representative. I forgot who. I'll see if I can make contact with them again (been a while) and get some more information and possibly a contact within Factor 5 to confirm this. If not, I'll change the info accordingly.

On the second question, yes, I got the info from CAPS. I've also talked with Martyn Brown, though, and he's said that Team17 will be looking into releasing more classics for free, through other sites to begin with (Dream17 and Back2Roots have been selected so far and have some games to offer in at least the classic ADF format).

Okay, it was possibly me that you talked too. However, if I did indeed tell you these things, I should have added that it wasn't really information that was meant to go public until it actually happened. ;)

I do seem to remember speaking to Martyn Brown also. I will have to dig his mail out. I seem to remember him wanting to help the cause, so I should really contact him again...

3drealms has just released Adventure-Fun Pack & Fun-Pak as freeware & it can be downloaded from http://www.3drealms.com/downloads.html . Even though both of these are listed on the download page, the links for Adventure-Fun Pack & Puzzle-Fun Pack both lead to the same download so you only have to click on the Adventure-Fun Pack link.

Don D. Worth released his commerical PC game called Beneath Apple Manor as freeware. Beneath Apple Manor was released for the Apple 2 in 1980 & ported to the PC in 1983. The PC version was released in 1983. Beneath Apple Manor is a roguelike adventure game & you can download it from http://www.bol.ucla.edu/~worth/

Inter-Active Arts released their shareware game called Legend of the Silver Talisman as freeware. This game is silimar to Gauntlet & the game can be downloaded from http://www.inter-active-arts.com/lst.html . They also released Munchman as freeware. Munchman is similar to Pac-Man & can be downloaded from http://www.inter-active-arts.com/munchman.html .

The author who runs Miurasoft released his shareware RPG called Miura Warrior as freeware . Actually, it has been freeware for over 4 yrs (I remember playing this game several years ago). The game can be downloaded from http://www.miurasoft.com/mw.html .

Although not a commerical/shareware product, a programer made a freeware patch which gives 256 colors & Midi support to Ultima 4 & the patch can be downloaded at http://www.moongates.com/u4/upgrade/Upgrade.htm.

Michael Hoenie released his shareware game called Dungeons of Morabis as freeware. Dungeons of Morabis is a rougelike adventure game & you can download it from http://bhs.broo.k12.wv.us/pub/MegaGames1/GAMES/ADVENTUR/ , just look for morabis.zip. If this website goes down, just do a search for morabis.zip, this file is stored on a good amount of servers. The author mentions in the morabis.doc file which is inside the morabis.zip file that he has released his game as public domain. Well, it seems that this game has been free for 12 yrs since the morabis.doc file is from 1992.

Oops, then. I've been keeping a watchful eye out for changes on the Factor 5 website ever since being given the "news", but so far I've seen nothing in IPF format on their site.

Yeah, Martyn Brown is a real oldschool type of gamer, I suppose. Good thing too, since Team 17 is really one of the oldest Amiga era developers still around. Also, Squirminator2K on this forum (and at forum.team17.com) has been allowed to offer the Amiga games via his website (aforementioned Dream17). He only has ADFs today, though. *hint hint*

@soloredd, no I'm sorry, Oregon Trail was never released as freeware as far as I can find out.

We have talked to Factor 5 semi-recently, but I think they are very busy atm. As it currently stands they have an A4000 ready to dump some of their stuff and were trying to put it on their network. I don't want to bother them too much, but now E3 is over, I might give them another bell to see what it happening.

I'll look into to Team 17 stuff, especially since we have probably most of their games preserved now. :)
