EugeneE3RD
Here is another update. About 2 yrs ago, I mentioned that Jeff Minter of Llamasoft released his games for free download years ago but his web site went down & I could only find an Internet archive link. Well, Jeff was put most of his games for free download on his site. Goto http://www.llamasoft.co.uk/softography.php & goto the bottom of the site to download his old games for 8-bit systems, 16-bit systems, et al. EugeneE3RD
Another shareware/commercial game has been re-released for free download by the copyright authors. The game is called Eye Of The Kraken & it is a 2D point & click game. Read about the game at http://www.absurdus.net/kraken/game.htm & you can download the game from http://www.absurdus.net/kraken/buynow.htm . Just a word of warning, this game clocks in at a 152.6 MB download so if you are on dial-up, I would suggest using a downloader with restart support such as Free Download Manager, et al. EugeneE3RD
Another shareware/commerical game was released for free download. The game is called The Prodigious Escapee which is a puzzle game. This game is a Windows game which requires the Visual Basic Runtime to be able to run the game & you can download the game from http://www.funpcgame.com/productO0.html . The download for the Visual Basic Runtime on the above page is broken but you can download it from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;DisplayLang=en Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/65246-classics-for-free/page/21/#findComment-588198582 Share on other sites
PGHammer
I'm slowly making progress in my list of game makers I want to contact for this little 'project'.If anyone can help me get working email contact info for any of the following companies, I'd be grateful. ;) Microprose (featuring Micro Value / Micro Style / Spectrum Holobyte) Mindscape (featuring Capstone / The Software Toolworks) Ocean (bought by Infogrames) Titus (featuring Palace) Psygnosis THQ (featuring Rainbow Arts / Softgold) GT Interactive (featuring Renegade) As far as I can understand from their reply, Magnetic Fields may provide links to downloads from their homepage soon if everything checks out with their former publisher Gremlin. Magnetic Fields are responsible for awesome racing series Lotus Turbo Challenge and Supercars. I've mailed Sales Curve (pr@sci.co.uk) too, to ask them about releasing Silkworm, SWIV and Rodland among others, as well as contacting Silmarils (info@silmarils.com). I've also contacted neo Software (now called Rockstar Vienna, part of Rockstar) to ask them if they're willing to release some of the neo Classics on their homepage. Their email is office@rockstarvienna.com if anyone else wants to get in touch with them. GT Interactive was purchased by Infogrames (now under the ATARI brand) THQ is still around (they are the publisher of Supreme Commander) Psygnosis (publisher of the entire WipeOut series, among others) was purchased by Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA). While WipeOut was a flagship pack-in title for the original PlayStation, it was developed (and published) by then-indie developer Psygnosis. In fact, both the first two titles in the trilogy were also published by Psygnosis for the PC (WipeOut: 2097 for the Playstation was called WipeOut: XL in US PC trim; amazingly, though it was included with several 3dfx Voodoo Graphics and Voodoo II cards, WipeOut: XL was a Direct3D Windows-based title, and a great looking one at that. It had some of the best rain effects in *any* game of its day, and they were unique to the PC version. One rather persistent rumor was that like the first two games in the trilogy, WipeOut 3 was also going to be a dual-platform title; however, the acquisition of Psygnosis by SCEA ruined that idea, and WipeOut 3 became Playstation-exclusive.). PGHammer
great thread cappuchok,I took a look at liberatedgames.org's forums and found out that S.WI.N.E (RTS)can be downloaded for free: http://www.stormregion.com/ Liberatedgames also brought back memories of Allegiance (great online MP space sim with strategic gameplay), which indeed has been available for free for quite a while (47MB download): http://www.freeallegiance.org/modules.php?...nload&cid=2 :-) Ahhhh, S.W.I.N.E. Even in the US when Red Alert was king (I ran into the demo for S.W.I.N.E between the original RA and RA2), S.W.I.N.E was a strategy title that, while serious, didn't take itself that way. Even their ads would have you ROTFL (they referred to RTS as Rabbit Tail Stew *and* Real Tasty Sausage, after the two sides in S.W.I.N.E). The free full version is available both as a torrent and a single large download (in English, French, or German). Glad to see it available. Minifig
Maybe this would be the thread to ask in.. I'm looking for a game I used to play on my Apple IIc, back in the day .. You were a spy trying to rescue someone, and all I remember is it had multiple stages, like a stage where you were flying a plane, a stage where you were going up a mountain in a ski lift, and all sorts of great stuff... I can remember when you died, the screen used to say "EAT DIRT --" where the -- is, it was the main characters name.. Unfortunately, thats all I can remember. :( Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/65246-classics-for-free/page/21/#findComment-588612849 Share on other sites

XavierHyde
Telltale Games have released episode 4 of the first "season" of the new "Sam & Max" episodic games as freeware, get it at Telltale Games' website, and consider buying the entire season if you like the free episode (the version you buy in regular stores is crippled with SecuROM, so if you care about keeping your originals safe by always playing from backups (if you're a longtime LucasArts fan, you probably live by this advice that is touted in every LucasArts manual I can remember), I'd recommend buying it online directly from Telltale). EugeneE3RD
It's been a long time since I posted to this thread but I was over at Aminet downloading some Amiga games & I noticed another Amiga commerical game was released for free download. The game was released last year & the game is called Aqua. Aqua is Myst style graphic adventure game that was originally made for the Amiga as a commercial product and later ported to MorphOS as part of the SuperBundle program. The author released the game for free download as as a gift to those that continue to support MorphOS and Amiga software. Both MorphOS and Amiga executables are included as well as all required data files. The game is downloadable at the role playing section of Aminet at http://aminet.net/game/role. This game is released as 4 separate downloads which are: Aqua_1.lha Aqua_2.lha Aqua_3.lha Aqua_4.lha The homepage of the author is at http://members.shaw.ca/realstar/ . I suggest that everyone check out the games section of Aminet located at http://aminet.net/tree?path=game , there are a good amount of shareware/commerical games which have been released for free download on Aminet. Game such as Aqua, Genetic Species, et al. EugeneE3RD
Well, I found another site which has legal downloads of classic video games. The site that i'm gonna mention is related to the Tandy Color Computer aka Coco. The site at http://nitros9.lcurtisboyle.com/coco_game_list.html lists all the games released for the Coco and it also has a few of the games available for download (the authors have given permission for the games to be distrubuted for free), the games that you can download have (includes download) next to their name. Adventure Construction Kit (ACK) which was released as freeware several years ago has now been updated by the original author. It is now up to version 3.03 and it now runs on Windows and OS X. John_T
Talking of steam... although not 'free' Half Life 1 is available for '$0.98'/98cents until the 21st November at Noon PST. It has been for a few days but haven't seen a post about it on here before. Apologies for re-posting it if it has already been posted... It is an amazing game for those who haven't played it, and at this price is well worth the money. If you want an even older game I believe Red Alert 1 is available as Freeware from the red alert website.
