LittleNeutrino Veteran Posted September 8, 2008 Veteran Share Posted September 8, 2008 Ok this might sound weird but i am going to try to explain it the best i can.. On a Mac no matter what program you are in the Menu bar is on the Finder bar. (File, Edit, View, ETC...) is there a way on Ubuntu to do the same thing so that programs will have it on the Taskbar (thing with the menu, clock, icons, etc...) instead of in the programs themselves. hyb
Do you mean you want the Applications, Places etc moved down to the bottom, i don't really understand what you mean. :p Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/666886-ubuntu-taskbar-like-mac/#findComment-589757688 Share on other sites
magik
I think he wants a unified Task/Start Menu. I think that requires modifying the window manager and I'm not sure of a *nix WM that supports a unified Task/Start Menu. LittleNeutrino Veteran Posted September 8, 2008 Author Veteran Share Posted September 8, 2008 No like in a Mac when you have an application open the (File, Edit, View,ect...) menus are on the task/finder bar. i want to be able to do that on Ubuntu when i have an application open. LittleNeutrino Veteran Posted September 8, 2008 Author Veteran Share Posted September 8, 2008 In this image you see the task/finder bar at the top with file edit and such on it i was wondering if it was possible to do that with Ubuntu. hyb
As far as i know i don't think that it's possible. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/666886-ubuntu-taskbar-like-mac/#findComment-589757852 Share on other sites
Lasker
yeah I think is impossible, it require to modify the OS itself, not even a theme can do that. Fish
Isn't this what that Mac4Lin project does? I'm sure I've seen this hack before. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/666886-ubuntu-taskbar-like-mac/#findComment-589757876 Share on other sites
LittleNeutrino Veteran Posted September 8, 2008 Author Veteran Share Posted September 8, 2008 I was not sure if there was an applet that could simply be added to the Panel like the so many there already are. LittleNeutrino Veteran Posted September 8, 2008 Author Veteran Share Posted September 8, 2008 i looked at the Mac4lin thing and it did not have anything that i was talking about it in however it does make it visually look like mac. What i am trying to do is get it to do something that i have only seen in mac. Pseudonym
I remember when I was customising my Feisty install, the Howto I was reading had a section on this but it was really complex and I didn't bother. However, it definitely is possible, just search around for OS X Ubuntu theme and stuff. Alex Shenoy
I know there is a patch for gnome to do this. I have seen and used it. But it was buggy. And this was a long time ago, so I don't know if it still exists. Actually I took a second and used google and came up with this: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/global_menu. I knew I saw it before. There you go, but use it at your own risk. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/666886-ubuntu-taskbar-like-mac/#findComment-589760296 Share on other sites
Old Man Pickle
Just installed gnome2-globalmenu and it works well (except for displaying firefox's menu). CrimsonRedMk Member Posted March 6, 2009 Member Share Posted March 6, 2009 Yeah, i've had this installed at some point too, it's not quite done yet, and some applications don't work. Not ready for prime time yet imo. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/666886-ubuntu-taskbar-like-mac/#findComment-590668118 Share on other sites
-Noah-
I tried it once and it removed tons of packages. Somehow, Ubuntu was still running alright so I did not restart and had Synaptic reinstall the packages and get rid of globalmenu. You can try it, but don't get your hopes up. Mine looked fine without it anyway. Below is Ubuntu with Mac4Lin, AWN and some other customized stuff. I made it so that it boots up looking like a Mac, login looks like mac, fonts look like mac, pointer, firefox, pretty much everything you can do.
