Welcome to Neowin 5

Might I ask what design restraints are preventing the front page being a tad more fluid in it's resizing?

+1

A simple enough script has already shown it can go wider without breaking, so I'm interested to know why such a slim design in a computing realm where so many people use widescreen monitors?

stop complaining about the ads, because without the ads, neowin wouldn't be here, so just accept it!

I am complaining about the completely ridiculous placement of t

he ad not the fact that neowin has ads. I have always been fine with he ads.

as you see an ad smack in the middle of something is quite annoying.

It just bites that the fact i'm paying for a sub means I still get ads. Heck, in the forums all the requirement is that you register not to see the ads. Front page, you pay, and you still get 'em? ehhhhh. :/

Nice work on that click to refresh, but I need a new mouse already and i'd like the auto refresh back. It's just invaluable, sorry guys.

Nup - sorry.. doesnt cut it for me..

I'm gonna agree with Raa on the cramped feel, and the look in general... nah..

I liked the old layout - it was clean, functional, had a good layout - it just worked!

Gotta pay the bills some how right?

There is a lot of space taken up from the ads, I will agree with that, and I am sure they could change the layout around to incorporate a better flow, but how long do you spend on the front page? Most of the time is really spent on the forums, which has very small ads (this version anyways). Also, one of the developers (Timan i think) said the section of news has been cut down, rather then pasting huge blabs about news, where most of it is stored inside the "Read More.." link

I am really loving the comment section of the site, it was really well done (Y)

Well, I don't see the big deal ... like mentioned, how much time do people REALLY HONESTLY spend on the front page? I think I might spend a total of 2 seconds on the front ... if I want to know the stories, I check twitter .... then it takes me to the whole story...

This is really minor nitpicking, but in the about section where it lists the advertiser's contact details, area code 905 is not the US, but Canada. ;)

Yes, Yes it is. I would know, because my area code is 905 :p

Ambiance's pic just about sums up what just about everyone has been trying to say the last 17 pages or so. I agree completely with his idea, it keeps the new ideas, while making it a little more familiar and easier to set eyes upon.

Am I the only one who doesn't like it that much :/ ?

No, you're not. I find the colors combined with the newer font very hard to read. It makes my eyes go all blurry and watery. I'd really like the option to switch back to the old look. :(

It's also more ads than the previous version. :(

We have replied to this on this thread and the main page. No you cannot switch back to the old version.

As for real estate on the screen, lots of people are moaning about this but if we change it to be wider it'll break the whole ideas behind neowin5.

Like others have said look at other sites like vnunet, ars, cnn, ebay etc etc and there is fixed width for reasons. Just because we didn't have fixed width before doesn't mean we will have fixed width now. It just takes a little getting used to that's all.

HTML was meant to flow like print layout. Why does Neowin want to restrict that?

If I subscribe will the ads go away?

Nope. :(

I like the header design, but the layout of information irritates me. The thought process behind it seems to have been: how much stuff can we shove in? Before, there wasn't as much stuff, but it presented information in a simple manner that one could easily discern and use. Now, information is crammed together and it doesn't offer as much text per entry. Please go back to focusing on use, rather than stuff.
