deletedxyz
I just watched Blue Submarine No. 6. I am conflicted on whether to call this an average show or a failed attempt to look artistic with some VERY interesting choices of character designs and preach environmentalism and humanity's role as the dominant species. Talking shark + Chimeras + Nuclear submarine warfare + Environmentalism = What am I watching?! Did I mention that the talking shark cries and throws tantrums and molests fish girls with red eyes who act like Chi from Chobits? It's a very short four episode OVA, that can be watched by any bored fan of post apocalyptic anime. I don't feel that I have wasted my time watching this one since it showed ideas that are not normal at all in anime terms (which is quite impressive for a series in a genre that loves to dress little girls in fetish clothing). It probably made me realizee how much I have lowered my standards for anime as I have watched and read hundred's of series. Its main male protagonist is comparable to Hei (Darker than Black) and Ichise from Texhnolyze since he constantly questions his existence subtly and tries to act like the typical "few words, a lot of action poses" hero. 4/10 for being a complete mind numbing message of environmentalism from a senile man who tries to preach by bringing sentient chimeras that he created to kill billions of humans in order to provoke them to use nuclear warfare and destroy any chance of humanity's survival. Another anime which we've got a different opinion about. I loved the anime due to Range Murata's character designs. Plus I have a weakness for steam punk. The story was also nice imo. I don't understand what's so bad about "environmentalism". You'll see that somewhat back in Shangri-La. Also, what where the things not normal in terms of anime? Both talking animals and environmentalism are seen a lot in anime's. Also, what where the things not normal in terms of anime? Both talking animals and environmentalism are seen a lot in anime's. I don't have a problem with environmentalism. Studio Ghibli movies, such as Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and a few others executed the message of environmentalism and respect towards nature. I can't really classify this anime series as steam punk since this is simply a violent series with a story that obviously shows that the producers did not know how to execute properly. The convoluted plot of a man trying to teach mankind by creating chimeras who are capable of sentient thought and executing advanced war strategies while using nuclear arms is probably one of most absurd I've come across. It felt like the producers were simply creating the characters as they created each episode was the last straw for me. The first episode was great, regardless of the poor animation (i.e. clouds were just floating, static art drawn by children) and I was expecting something quite cool. Instead, I realized too late that I was in the middle of a storm of absolute garbage leaving me to wonder whether I am wasting time with watching anime in general. :p There are only a few handful of movies and anime series that have illustrated what steam punk is about. Last Exile, Steamboy, Fullmetal Alchemist and Howl's Moving Castle are few of the best examples of the genre. Udedenkz
Last Week I finished the second season of Darker than Black - (Science Fantasy Action Drama). Although not perfect, Darker than Black overall is a must see. Some elements can be compared to that of LOST - the setting, the mystery, origins of the Gates, and so on - all these elements are kept in the dark and slowly revealed, slowly. This is both good and bad - as it made me want to watch more, but also can lead to disappointments due to how slow the supernatural elements are explained & expanded. What really gets you is the main characters and the main story. Each character seems well though out and not just a one dimensional tough guy. You can connect with them. Even those that are introduced and killed off in the same episode, although not always. This might not suit everyone, especially if you don't enjoy starting to like a character just to have him/her killed. Another positive is the amount of changed between the first season and the second season. It was a total refresh to my interest. Although the second season was even bleaker then the first. Also, did I mention action? violence? It does that pretty nicely. I will give this one a 8 / 10. To me it seems unbalanced being serious but also having comic relief character (the detective) - it doesn't seem to balance it like FMA:B or Elfen Lied balances humanity and inhumanity. It also reveals little, just like LOST, it seems obvious this one will go for a few more seasons at least. If ignoring this and the background adverts, it seems like a good series aimed at older audience. -------------- I am currently watching Toaru Majutsu no Index. The story seems like something someone pulled out of his/her ass. Same goes with the story development. It also doesn't aim anywhere at being serious or anything. So whats good about it? I guess it is the comedy, action, & powers that people have. Nonetheless it seems easily watchable as long as you ignore the story. Kinda like Star Trek (2009) - you can enjoy it as long as you leave your brain at home. Can't rate yet, didn't finish. -------------- Another one, is Welcome to the NHK. This one is gold. It is different from other ones I have seen: It is about a person who locked himself from socializing with other people for like 3 years - pretty much doesn't work, go out, talk to people and how one person is trying to get him out of it. Lots of moments that are just awkward to watch. Comedy elements which seem actually perfect. The plot also seems interesting. Can't rate, just watched about 10 or so episodes. --------------- *snip* I liked the hybrids, some. Some designs could have been more scarier, more realistic, but I don't think the show aims for an adult audience. I think there is no way to make underwater fights interesting. You are trying to simplify the plot. There doesn't seem to be any environmentalist message in the Blue Sub #6 - otherwise I would think of it higher. :p Also there are no parallels between the hybrid and Chii, the list of differences though is massive. The anime actually gets to its meaning with Hayami being stranded and the later Musuca & Hayami scenes. From your summary, it seems that we got madly different understandings of Zorndyke's (spelling?) intentions - the last episode. ------ From my point of view, the anime is just a bit too childish. Sure there is nudity, violence, but still it is not great from the perspective of the story. Re-watching it, recently, I have found it lacking whereas before I did not. It seems to be an age thing. The CGI is also lacking, but then again this seems due to its age. The anime gets better later on, with part 3 and 4. On the other side, it doesn't seem to have that dumb humor that is pretty much a rampant plague. 6 / 10 Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/702580-official-animemanga-thread/page/134/#findComment-592035678 Share on other sites
Jamushroom Veteran Posted December 29, 2009 Veteran Share Posted December 29, 2009 ^That's what I liked about "To Aru Majutsu no Index", that it was a humor and action driven anime. Doesn't really have a big deep going story line or anything, but the artwork made up for that imo. Was an easy and enjoyable watch :) @maskedforever: All I can say is that we've both got different ideas about the anime ;) Also, I'll be watching the first episode of Aoi Bungaku today. I bet it's gonna be an interesting watch.
