Anyone know why the tv guide is not working in the latest build. When going through setup it gets to the setup tuner stage and then pops up and said that atsc guide listings are not available for your region. My region is set to the United States of course. Listings worked perfect in 6801. Did they update the guide software and haven't turned the servers on yet or is it something else?

Where should we begin to fix this problem?

yea..everyone gets the playnow install error..even on 6801...thats weird that belgium is working...they may have pulled the us listings server for maintenance or upgrade purposes then

guide is version 5.0 in this build..anyone know if thats the same from the last build?

Yeah can't for the life of me figure it out. Vista 6801's guide still works, I've compared the registry entries key by key, tried porting over registry entries, etc. Still can't get it to work.

Oh, regarding playnow:

My build couldn't access microsoft.com when I first installed it and I had to go tools->internet options->connections->lan settings and disable "automatically detect settings". After that playnow downloaded fine.

Note the guide still doesn't work so playnow has nothing to do with the guide issues. I myself I'm trying to connect to the canadian guide data.

The guide updator in 6801 also works when run from 6956 (mcupdate.exe) but kills the tv setup.

The log file generates

	DateTime=2008-12-08T01:04:03.4583203Z

tried your fix for playnow but im still getting the same error..wont install :(

Hm, well doesn't matter... doesn't fix the guide anyways.

Edit: Making progress on the TV Guide issues. Its a permissions problem as some fiddling around with mcupdate.exe and administrator privilidges got the guide to update.

No permanent solution yet.

am i correct in saying that playnow is only needed for devices like the ati cablecard digital tv tuner?

did you have to rerun setup after you ran that as admin?

tried doing the admin thing..2/‎7/‎2008 8:25:44 PM - The NetworkMetadata package is not available...did you do anything else special?

Ok so here is what I had to do. This isn't perfect, I'm still working on it.

First, mcupdate.exe is run by Network Service by default which does not have permission to carry out mcupdates tasks

As a quick overview, I had to do the following:

Edit the registry to force mcupdate.exe to run as admin (with the RUNASADMIN key)

Create a shortcut to mcupdate which had runasadmin enabled.

Run Media Center and setup the tv

When you get to the downloading stage, media center will be unable to run mcupdate (because it requires admin privilidges

Run the shortcut created

Media Center should complete

I'll post more detailed instructions tomorrow but right now I don't have time.

Note: I did this for analog, not digital cable. There may or may not be some other guide issues with ATSC.

I had no problem with analogue cable, I just skipped allowing MC to install "playnow", and my guide works fine. As for digital/atsc, hasn't MS disabled that for versions outside of the USA? (read that someplace that the US is the only ones that digital works for.... although that may have been the TV Pack they've been working on which might have made its way into win7?)

Yeah I believe I am having the same issue as the original poster, I am within the United States and Vista Media Center ATSC guide data worked fine but when I try to get guide info for my ATSC channels in Windows 7 it tells me that listings are not available in my region or something like that. Analogue cable guide works perfect but I hate seeing the dreaded "No data available" for all my ATSC channels.

Although I was ready for these types of problems since im obviously using a prebeta version of Windows.

Of course we could not expect everything to work, I'm only worried of those bulls.th restrictions, which why I cannot watch US TV on the net only because I live in central Europe ! Hulu gives me a big middle finger only and so on. Why the hell do we need this ?

the fact that PlayReady won't install is a bug, not because you are out of the US. I should note though that mine eventually installed, no idea why it worked. I'm in Canada btw. No I don't have digital cable (well I do but its encrypted so no go in Windows)

Thanks Ames,

I posted my version of your workaround at: http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread...2088#post882088

  1. Create a shortcut to mcupdate.exe, using this command line: C:\Windows\ehome\mcupdate.exe -manual -nogc -p
  2. In Media Center, start the TV Signal Setup. Enter your location and the other setup information. It will start the download but be unable to continue.
  3. Start the Task Manager by right-clicking on the Windows Menu Bar. Choose to see all users processes. Kill the mcupdate process.
  4. Right-click the mcupdate shortcut and run as administrator. It should appear in the Task Manager as an administrator process.
  5. Media Center should finish downloading the setup parameters. Choose your cable provider, etc.
  6. When Media Center starts to download the EPG, kill the mcupdate process.
  7. Run the mcupdate shortcut as administrator. 8. Media Center setup should run to completion.

I tried running ehshell as administrator. I tried starting the ehRec service as a system rather than a network service. But nothing worked to give mcupdate greater rights.

I was able to download guides for Vancouver BC, then redo the setup for Bellingham WA. In the latter configuration I was able to use both analog and digital tuners on my ATI HDTV Wonder. Cool!

I also discovered that I could save the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\eHome\mcepg1-1-0.db file for both the Canada and US configurations. I could swap either one in, reboot WMC and have that guide and tuner configuration operating. Next, I'll try to hack the database to enable ATSC in Canada. Any help you can give would be great.
