Loving beta 1. Hopefully they'll post a key for me on MSDN soon :) Going to try and install Visual Studio/Office 2007/SQL Server and the like today. If OneCare worked, i'd probably try and use it regularly.

Windows Live Messenger 9 seems to separate the contact list and the display picture into different window handles, which kind of messes up the window peek from the taskbar, since you can't single click the open messenger window to minimize it. Was it this way in previous builds? Hopefully the 7 team will work with the Live team to get this issue sorted out.

I liked Vista and have supported it, but 7 is definitely another step in the right direction.

For the record, Microsoft Fingerprint Reader still isn't recognized as a biometric device. I wonder if drivers have to register themselves in there. Haven't looked at any new DDK docs regarding that, assuming there even are any.

Oh! Also love the new programmer mode in the calculator.

OneCare does work, all you have to do is set the compatibility mode of files winss.exe and winssintro.exe to Windows Vista for all users.

Have you tried using the Fix boot problems option on the installation dvd. Works surprisingly well at times.

Yes, there really is no "Fix boot Problems" it's called something like Repair Startup, but it checks the system out and says "All is fine" basically, since the DVD is in the drive....

Has anyone done a comparison of the Windows folder of a clean install of Vista compared to a clean install of 7? I saw an earlier post that someone compared Windows folder sizes between 6956 and 7000 but I'm wondering how much more of a difference it would be to compare it to a Vista install. Seems interesting. :)

Yeah that did take a little getting used to.

Just realized this. If you don't use the current version of Windows Live Messenger (any version of 9) and go back to WLM 8, you will get the icon in the taskbar back.

Now the question is...go back to the ugly WLM8 or deal with this new way it handles WLM 9?

Hi all!! I have been lurking forever but decided to finally sign up :)

To me it actually seems a smidge SLOWER than 6956. But i haven't really spent the time to put it through the tests to REALLY know ;)

Only problem is my vista drive STILL will not show up. it hasnt yet on any of the leaked builds!

Hi, Welcome to Neowin, Do you mean you can't see the partion where Vista is installed from your Win7 installation? if so then you need to give the Drive a name or it wont show up, to give it a name go to Start Menu/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management then on the left select "Disk Management" then highlite the partion where Vista is installed and right click then select "Properties" then on the "General" Tab next to the driver icon Enter a name you want for that partion ie: "Vista System" Then click "Ok" or "Apply" you should now see your Vista partition from Windows 7, I'm not sure but perhaps you will need to reboot before you see it.

WLM is the only program I don't like the new taskbar with. When somebody says something it annoys me that I can't see who's said it straight away. I think something like a small thumbnail of their pic on the taskbar item would work pretty well.

w00t! I'm now part of the Win7 club :)

What's the best driver to use for a GeForce 8400M GT ? Downloading 179.28 for Vista 32bit now.

EDIT:

The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are

compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit. :'(

I think it's much better this way, without a tray icon. However, I do think that switching between conversation windows is a bit weird.

I think they should implement a way that certain windows do not group in the taskbar. This way you can have WLM running and see each conversation window separately. Also, the thumbnail idea of Examinus would allow you to see which conversation window belongs to which contact, without enabling labels.

Windows 7 is looking great so far but theres one thing thats bugging me!

Windows 7 is going to ship with Windows DVD Maker but not any software for viewing photos, creating movies or chatting? This is one area that needs looking at as Macs have most essential stuff like this built in and new users will be quite confused at this i feel.

Most of that Mac stuff comes with iLife, not OS X.

On Win7, that stuff comes with Windows Live Essentials.

How do you get Aero working in MS Virtual PC 2007? I have installed the guest additions.

Also, does this beta have the 'peek'? I can't get it to work. Also cannot get window thumbnails to work. What am I doing wrong?

im suppose to get 4.3 rating for my disk performance. im getting 2.0 wtf

Most likely our disk has exceptionally bad random access performance, and will introduce noticeable hangs as you use your computer. that's what causes it to be limited to a 3.0 (bad) or 2.0 (extremely bad) rating.

The idea is to inform users which components are holding their systems back. In your case, it's your hard drive.

hey...somebody notice if WARP is active in this build?????? 'cause im so impatient to use it with my weak x3100 (sorry intel)

WARP is active in every build. Heck, I'm pretty sure WARP was in Vista, the only new feature is WARP 10 (for Direct3D 10+) which is a developer / platform feature, not something that's going to make a difference to use as a user.

Definitely do not like how Windows Live Messenger no longer has a icon for the taskbar. (N)

What do you mean? It has an icon in the taskbar all the time as long as it's running, even if the buddy list is closed.

I don't think you can use any of these features in a Virtual environment, because the OS doesn't have access to the GPU, which AFAIk, renders most of the these features.

:::Brandon, when you have the buddy list out, it will show two instances of WLM, which is pointless. I want the icon on the right, just like AIM...as it should be. Why is there a need to show me two instances just because I have the buddy list open? That would mean THREE instances of it if I get a message or send a message.

I've produced an amazing screenshot of what I mean:

Obviously this is if I'm sending a message to myself, but you get the idea!

Windows Update has a beta driver. I think it installs automatically. Go with the default, it's WDDM 1.1 and saves some memory etc.

This is a known issue with the current WLM design. Remember, Win7's beta hasn't even been officially announced yet, which means this is super early integration for them. They know this aspect needs to be improved.

For users who keep the default taskbar setup it isn't as noticeable since the "extra window" gets grouped into the WLM icon.

As a workaround, you can run WLM in Vista compatibility mode, and that extra window goes away. However, this breaks some other Win7 integration features (the WLM jump list stops updating, and you won't see icon overlays).
