Any changes to the taskbar when there are too many apps opened and has to be shown in two lines? It seems like there could be some sort of fading or so when switching between taskbar lines when it is at its normal height. In 6956, it's just a simple and abrupt change, but I was thinking it could use some fading or shifting of some sort. Thoughts?

Is anyone else having problems with IE8 ? Both in 6956 and Beta 1, it crashes randomly and I have to use task manager to manually shut it down. It happends from time to time and it usually happends when there ish flash content on the page. I installed the latest version of flash player but that doesen't seem to help. (I am running all pages in compability mode)

Major Question: Are ATSC guide data data working in Media Center?

In the last build it would say that guide data not available in my area when clearly it works on Vista.

I will be able to test this for myself soon but wanted to see if anyone has had any luck yet.

Nevermind, is working now. I just change the desktop background and is showing the preview.

taskbar preview?

Hi guys, does anybody knows if the thumbnail preview in task bar has been disabled? I just install w7 beta and the taskbar just display text and no preview.

Cheers,

Hlov

I installed the 7000 build last night and was pretty impressed with the speed of bootup. Played counter strike source on it and performance was on par. There were a few minor bugs here and there, but one thing really baffled me. My audio device is a realtek alc833 onboard and when win7 was installed, it automatically chose a high definition audio device driver, which worked fine. I don't know if anything changed but I started having major issues with my mic.

There are two mic ports for my computer, one in the front and one in the rear. I have a headset plugged into the front, so obviously, under recording devices, I have that set as the default. When I speak, the greenbar beside the devices moves up and down.

However if I try to use skype or even windows sound recorder, no sound gets recorded. I tried messing with the volume mixer and device properties to no avail. Then I tried setting the Rear mic port (the one with nothing plugged in) as the default. Strangely, windows sound recorder started working. However, sound quality with in skype was horrendous. It could be that I installed beta 3 of skype since the stable version has compatibility issues. Also, when I tried testing my voice in game on Counter strike, no sound is recorded. I am not sure if its a driver issue or just windows 7 being very beta like.

O RLY?

Has anyone noticed the "Featured updates" option in Windows Update? It has the Ultimate Extras icon when the option isn't yet configured. Though, the icon doesn't show in the "Change settings", only when when the main page tells you that you have more options to configure does it show when you click the link.

Seems like Windows 7 Beta creates a new partition dedicated to the bootloader that is of 200MB.

Unfortunately, this has been an obstacle for me because I'm trying to tripleboot xp/vista/windows 7.

does anyone know what I can do? should i try booting xp off a logical? i already have windows 7 and vista installed so far

You always have to start with the oldest OS. If you now install XP your Vista/7 bootloader will be gone and you'll have to restore the boot from your 7 disk. The 200MB partition is actually for recovery, not for boot. You should leave it in.

When I dragged something like, "Documents", into the start menu, there's no option to un-pin it in the right click menu... The last time this happened, I cleared out all of the pinned applications by clearing something in the registry.

It's also not showing up in, "F:\Users\Kyang\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned" either.

Does anyone know of a simpler way to remove such an item?

That's a known bug in 6956. You just couldn't remove it. Not in 7 atm, but I'll check if it's still there in Beta 1.

How about you back the **** off, I get to chose whatever OS I want running on my system, and I don't need a sniveling little punk to tell me what I should and shouldn't think, honestly, who the **** do you think you are?

The OS performs exactly the same as Vista, despite having a handful of features thrown into it....

What the hell is your problem!? I never said what you should and shouldn't think! You basically said Windows 7 is the same as Windows Vista and I merely informed you of some of the amazing new features, user interface tweaks and performance improvements :)

Where in my post did I tell you what you should and shouldn't think and what you should and shouldn't use? I didn't!

However, in this new reply of yours, I feel I must say something.

You said:

"Doesn't mean I'm not going to work my ass off on this beta, and put in my honest feedback, hell, I might be able to help change a few things, doesn't mean I'll end up using it at the end, I just simply dislike the direction Windows is going.".

If you do not like the (much more efficient) direction Windows is going in and if you will more than likely not be using Windows 7 when it is released, why would you vigorously send feedback to Microsoft about things you do not like, trying to ruin it for the rest of us who are actually going to use Windows 7?

You obviously won't like a lot of the new improvements as you have already stated you prefer Linux and do not like the way Windows is evolving; therefore, I find it unfair you would try and ruin the new Windows for us (again, I must stress, before you decide to randomly get really offended :s like last time, I'm not telling you what you should and shouldn't do, I am just saying I find it unfair that you would try and re-shape an operating system to be your way - probably like Linux  - when you are probably not even going to be using it!)

Windows 7 is looking great so far but theres one thing thats bugging me!

Windows 7 is going to ship with Windows DVD Maker but not any software for viewing photos, creating movies or chatting? This is one area that needs looking at as Macs have most essential stuff like this built in and new users will be quite confused at this i feel.

As people have stated most of these applications have become part of Windows Live Essentials. However, you have pointed out something which I now find annoying and inconsistent :)

Why is Windows DVD Maker still part of Windows :s Why hasn't that been moved under the Windows Live banner and become Windows Live DVD Maker as part of Windows Live Essentials? That would make so much more sense! I realise it may be extra time and money spent on something which is not as important, but then Microsoft did chose to redevelop Movie Maker as Windows Live Movie Maker. I think they should have either left the features and interface of DVD Maker alone and rebranded it as Windows Live DVD Maker (taking it out of Windows 7) or just got rid of it altogether. I mean it doesn't have to have a consistent user interface with the Windows Live applications as they themselves unfortunately do not have consistent interfaces

Sorry, it's just a big inconsistency I noticed with the new operating system and I really hate inconsistencies.

I thought there will be BETA and RC, (no Beta 1, 2 and so on.....)

am i correct??, is this build labeled BETA or Beta 1??? just asking to make sure that there aren't much betas in they way to final (shorting final release time if you know what I mean?).

thanks

Yes this build will not be labelled as 'Beta 1' so I do not understand why many people keep referring to it as that? Microsoft have stated many times that they are planning on only having one beta and one release candidate, therefore, the Windows 7 Beta will be classed as the 'Windows 7 beta'. If they decide to have another beta (you never know what might go wrong in this beta) then that will be referred to as 'Windows 7 beta 2'

just had a quick play around and i am so happy microsoft finally removed the columns (name, type, size etc) from all the file views except detail

in vista it was so annoying and ugly having to see the columns in tile view large view etc

:)

I really do agree there! Please send a lot of feedback to Microsoft about this (or at the very least having it as an option to turn off) as many people unfortunately like this ugly user interface element! :( If you send a lot of feedback to Microsoft, they may either keep it removed or give us an option on it :)

We wouldn't want it to be permanently there again now would we?

I miss that it was handy to sort in other views
I believe that the columns were there simply to help you sort files easier (you could click on the columns no matter what view you were in and they would be sorted or grouped accordingly).

I don't see what is wrong with right-clicking and choosing 'Sort by' or 'Arrange by'? Surely this isn't a task you will be doing that often, so what is wrong with using the right-click functionality for when you do need to do it. It might not be quicker, but it is only a second or so longer. Why would you want an ugly, redundant, user interface element to return when you can just simply use the right-click functionality? I do not understand :/

If a mod is going to shut it down... that's BS. There have been posts for months here with no problem. Typical neowin.

Where in this thread has anyone stated that it is going to be "shut down"? You say "typical Neowin"...why? No one said they were going to close this thread. I do not see what made you say any of this? Please don't jump to conclusions and blame the Neowin staff for something they are not even going to do!

MUA=Most Used Apps

I think you are mistaken. It is not the 'Most Used Applications' it is the recently used applications and is dynamic. You can pin things there and turn off the dynamic changing and stop the recently used applications from appearing, but only then is it just your pinned applications, it isn't 'most used applications'. By default, the 'start' menu is different to pinning applications to the taskbar because it shows you recently used applications, which may be different to the pinned applications you have on the taskbar; however, I agree that there isn't really a need for it. I turn off my most recently used applications and there does need to be a re-think of the 'start' menu, in my opinion.

Something like this: http://www.withinwindows.com/2008/12/27/no...ws-7-m1-builds/ is a much better idea! Brandon, has anybody decided on bringing this back?

I know Brandon has already stated that the Windows 7 development teams wanted to retain some familiar UI (for those ridiculous people who can't get used to change), but in my opinion, there is no need for the 'start' menu now (or it at least needs to be changed dramatically) and this 'All Programs' part of Windows Explorer really is much better! :)

True, but, as Paul Thurrott says...

I don't listen to most of the things Paul Thurrott says. I look at his websites, but I form my own opinion about everything. He still gets many things wrong. I see nothing wrong with the new taskbar. I really think it is such an improvement!

Sorry for the long post everyone :D I just have a lot of opinions about things in Windows 7 and also a few people's ignorance really got to me :)

I'll ask again and phrase better this time: Have anyone been able to get the compatibility mode to work properly?

When I've tried just about any .exe I've gotten crashes instantly, it's damn annoying concidering I need to play AoE2 on the Win7 laptop soon :> (Old, but great game, and lessons about not installing beta OS on working machines are not needed, I'm well aware of my idioticy :p !)

EDIT: Holy ****, AoE2 started without any quirks, I haven't seen that since... Windows 98, when I was a kid!

I can see where the columns were helpful. No right clicking, and then being forced to mouse through a menu just to quickly sort a few files in as many ways as was needed. Every way they wanted something sorted was all available with a single click.

It's also obviously not completely redundant, since there is at least as much feedback lamenting its removal, each with a good example of functionality that the new changes don't maintain, as there are comments praising its removal.

I think that your approach in securing its removal, from calling it, "Ugly", to encouraging others to send more like-minded feedback is a little counter productive. I agree with your other idea. Make this an option.

Yes, I think you're right, especially as many people do like it and find it useful.

No matter how much I think it is ugly :p I think it is better as an option, like you say.

Hopefully Microsoft will listen to us and allow us to remove it if we wish :)

I noticed some strangeness with Speedfan .. my GPU temp seems to have gone down from about 33-35 deg to 26-28 deg! .. trivial I know!

Really liking everything else so far! .. I've always tended to use the tray for launching programs anyway .. (I normally create my own toolbars from folders which I've set up with my favourite programs) .. so the new superbar suits me well.

Heres my screenshot, not working too bad. Have notice that the Hard Drive working alot more. and CPU temp up a littlebit, was wondering i have a 20Gig, SATA Laptop drive. If i Installed it, and placed my Virtual Memory File onto this, would i get and extra speed out of it.

A few problems I'm having...

mIRC: When I exit the program I get the error: This Program requires a missing component (turns out this is MS Agent) Do I really have to install that crap?

RealVNC: Failed to connect: The operation completed successfully. (0) This is a show stopper for me, no remote desktop, no Win7 :(

EDIT: VNC Server also Crashes

Sony VAIO VGN-NR31J: VAIO Control Center, VAIO Event Service keep crashing

Brandon: When pinning "Computer" to the Superbar, it still by default opens up "Libraries". Is there a way to change this to "Computer" or even the User Profile folder?

You can create an Explorer shortcut on the superbar and get it to open anywhere you want - i have mine open in C:\. To do this, add an explorer shortcut to the superbar if there isn't already one there, then you need to go into the explorer properties, so right click the main icon, then right click "Windows Explorer"/properties and then amend the "Target" as required.

To get it to open in the root of C: the target reads "%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,C:\"

To open in "My Computer" is slightly more tricky as you have to use a GUID, but the target needs to read "%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,::{20d04fe0-3aea-1069-a2d8-08002b30309d}"

See http://www.viperlair.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2765 for more info :)
