And there was still the question: How do I run a elevated command prompt in Win7? I haven't found "Run as Administrator"

just right click on command prompt you should have the 2nd choose "run as Administrator"

Hmm... 5.8.2 - i just downloaded that from Lenovo but i didn't install it yet. I figured however i wouldn't need to install that (since that gives me the feature of fingerprint logon).

Oh well - umm as for Run As Administrator?

EDIT: I feel so stupid now, someone slap me, I always run cmd.exe through "Run..." so I was looking there, hahaha, oh well, you learn as long as you live!

EDIT2: Speaking of the devil, HOW do I "Run..." things as Administrator?

just find the icon and right click it and choose the option (or if you want it to ALWAYS run as admin just choose properties and go to the compatibility tab and enable that)

WAKE UP! :)

Does anyone know where the Software Explorer in Windows Defender went? I use it (ruthlessly) to edit out almost every startup program and find it a much more user-friendly and convenient UI than msconfig. It doesn't appear to be anywhere in Defender on W7

Is anyone else having problems with IE8 ? Both in 6956 and Beta 1, it crashes randomly and I have to use task manager to manually shut it down. It happends from time to time and it usually happends when there ish flash content on the page. I installed the latest version of flash player but that doesen't seem to help. (I am running all pages in compability mode)

You can avoid IE8 bugs by switching to Chrome, which I've been running for 2 weeks on 6956 without any extra bugs.

I have managed to try out Windows 7 on my computer using a VMWare image which I have managed to get from a "source".

Here are my computer specs:

Intel Pentium 4 Processor 3.0Ghz [L1:16KB L2:1MB]

1GB DDR RAM 200Mhz :o [Note, I only used 512MB RAM for the image]

Intel 82865G Graphics Controller :o :o

7200RPM HDD

First thing that caught my eye was the boot screen:

It is tons better than the normal loading bar animation.

I think the boot took around 40 secs from off to desktop, which is amazing considering my XP takes about the same time with twice the RAM. However, the graphics were a little choppy; no surprise thanks to my ancient integrated graphics. It obviously couldn't handle the transparency effects, and luckily they were turned off by default.

To increase performance, I loaded the Windows Classic theme, and disabled all the effects for maximum performance. The results were staggering. Let the pictures speak for themselves:

:o

243 MB? That is even lower than my XP installation [310MB]!

Needless to say, the OS was very responsive even with 512MB RAM and applications opened up in a snap. The OS was stable throughout my hour of "testing".

My verdict? If it can run on my computer [albeit with some of the eye candy turned off] fine and use lesser system resources than Windows XP, it is going to be an epic win!

For the guys using the leaked copy of the beta, did you allow 7 to connect to the internet? Is Microsoft going to send Ninjas after me for using a leaked copy?

Edited by Unto Darkness
Yes... They will send an elite NInja strike team to your house and cut your whole body to pieces

because you used windows 7 beta 1.

Oh noes! :o

Anyways, thanks the info. I am just paranoid about Microsoft suing me. :p

Haha, that should be no issue, if we put it like this, they probably know the location, IP and a lot more on several millions of pirated Vista/XP users, they don't sue them do they? (If it's a company they do send BSA after them though...)

If anything, more press, more hype about Win7 is only good for them, inofficially of course.

Wow.. The boot screen is so sexy

Did you see the animations? THAT is awesome!

I wonder what kind of an impact it would have on the boot time.

I have also noticed that the boot screen seems to be high res, unlike the low res crap on XP.

OK, I can't wait any longer! The reason why I have not installed Windows 7 so far is because I have only the one laptop. I thought about portioning the drive using the Disk Management in the Windows Vista control panel and dual-booting with Windows 7. However, my housemate who is a network engineer and has grown up with computers all his life (his dad is the owner and manager of a successful network engineering company in the UK) said to me that laptops are not designed with dual-booting in mind and I shouldn't dual-boot with operating systems on this laptop.

Is this true? I do not yet know much about hardware at all (I'm a software guy :p), so any help really would be appreciated :)

Also, if dual-booting is a safe option for me and it would not ruin my laptop or harm the files, settings, programs and stability of my Windows Vista partition, which program do you guys use to burn ISO files to discs?

Finally, if I installed Windows 7 on a seperate partition, would I be able to somehow easily transfer my programs over to Windows 7 somehow?

Thank you in advance :)

Your housemate is a moron who clearly is not well-informed in his field.

Really? :D

Thank you. That's fantastic then if that is true! He really convinced me though you see as he said he has grown up with computers all his life and he does know an incredible amount about hardware. He even builds efficient computers (which I realise isn't hard lol, but still).

He does seem to think network engineers know more about hardware than software engineers, though :shiftyninja:

Does anybody have any answers to my other questions then please?

WTF

What does he mean laptops are not designed for dual booting???

The laptop hardware has nothing to do with dual booting

Its more of a HDD thing, If you can specifiy 15-20GB of space for the 7 parition then wtf it will run fine or even better than vista

What your basically doing is taking a portion of your hard drive and giving it to win 7

None of your files or anything on your vista partition will be changed

It's perfectly fine to dual boot, If you can run vista.. Then you will run 7 even better

Thanks for all the info guys :) I really do feel a bit stupid :D

So, danisflying527, if I got a virus on my Windows 7 partition or something, it wouldn't affect anything on my Windows Vista partition? So basically, partioning the hard drive is sort of like using a different laptop? I could do whatever I want to the Windows 7 partition, fill it with spyware, viruses, etc and my other partitions would be just fine? :)

Which program do people use to burn ISOs then? I do have Nero somewhere...

Also would there be a way to easily put all my programs on the new partition?

Nope the virus has infected the win7 partition

Its a totally different part of your HDD

Virus can't creep through partitions =)

Use IMGburn to burn the ISO

Its pretty awesome and its free (google it)

Fantastic! I'm going to do it then! :D :D

Thank you very much for your help danisflying527 :) (Y)
