I have installed the beta build as an upgrade from the last leaked prebeta build. It upgraded with no problem for those of you who do not want to lose your stuff from the previous build. I will be reformating and reinstalling it now to test the installation.

Yes, because:

Windows 7's taskbar functions the same way it does in Windows Vista doesn't it?

'Aero Peek' and 'Aero Snap' are both in Windows Vista aren't they?

Having the functionality to be able to search Flickr (and other web services) inside the native Windows Search ('Federation Searching') was in Windows Vista wasn't it?

The useful Libraries feature (which has changed the way people will access their folders) was in Windows Vista wasn't it?

A much more functional and improved calculator (complete with 'Programmer' mode and many other new features) was included in Windows Vista wasn't it?

Windows Vista was built with touch-screen capable monitors in mind and full touch-screen gestures supported wasn't it?

Windows Vista was faster than it's predecessor and more lightweight, with DWM memory usage cut by 50% in regards to that of its predecessor, as well as much less services starting up when Windows starts than its predecessor, wasn't it?

Yes, -Hiroshi-... I see your point...

How about you back the **** off, I get to chose whatever OS I want running on my system, and I don't need a sniveling little punk to tell me what I should and shouldn't think, honestly, who the **** do you think you are?

The OS performs exactly the same as Vista, despite having a handful of features thrown into it, it didn't do what I feel it needed to warrant an upgrade from XP, certainly an upgrade from Vista to 7. Who cares about a better calculator?!

Go ahead, have fun, play with your new toy all you like, I'll continue using what works, and I'll probably switch to Linux from here on out.

Doesn't mean I'm not going to work my ass off on this beta, and put in my honest feedback, hell, I might be able to help change a few things, doesn't mean I'll end up using it at the end, I just simply dislike the direction Windows is going.

Is it just me or do I not see "Beta 1" listed on the desktop tag in this build... pretty sure that since it doesn't say that this means this isn't going to be the Beta 1 build so, why are people in such a huff over it? :D

Microsoft decided to not mark builds clearly. Have you seen any Alpha markers or anything? No. Paul Thurrott names build 7000 as Beta 1, so I think we can say it IS beta 1.

just a question about the superbar

I have noticed in some screen shots that some apps like firefox still show the program icon plus window text like the normal taskbar. Is this an issue with firefox or will apps eventually just show the program icon

It's not an issue. You can set if you want the superbar to show text or not, or to hide text when the superbar is getting full.

This comment kind of Irked me..

No one has told you not to use a certain OS, that IS Your Choice, but you have no need to come into a WINDOWS SECTION and bitch about how you want to use linux or mac.

The OS Does NOT Preform the same as Vista. Both work quite well in my opinion. Windows 7 has alot of under the hood improvement, though you may be too Dull to notice those because like many other shallow people you look at the: OMG! They made it even fancier! That means it's crappy and just like Vista! Think about the upgrade from 2000 to XP... Colored bars?! Yet it was still calm and simple and the UI everyone was used to. Along comes Vista and "OH NO! They copied MAC, they made it way to flashy! they moved this that and the other thing! I hate it!".

What I am getting at, is aside from how it looks you have no basis (Or none that you have presented) as to why it is Like vista.

As for the Calculator, I like the upgrade, I use the calculator alot on my computer while doing homework, so the upgrade (Though it doesn't warrant the use of 7) Is a nice improvement.

As you can probably tell from this topic we are having fun, it's a new build we get to test, to poke around in, etc. No one cares if you are going to Linux, so stop saying it, it doesn't make you look any better (You are looking kinda silly at this point).

Out of curiosity though? Which direction do you want windows to go towards?

Support for OLD-ASS Hardware? (Can't affoard to upgrade?)

Removing any color from the UI?

Using Old Technology? Bring back fat16 and Pre-NT!

Make it free! (Pirate it dumbass)

Make it open source (In all honesty, what the hell would anyone do with the windows source?)

Just because Linux has support for low end machines does not make it any better, or make it be in a "right direction". I wouldn't even use Linux on my desktop, but on a low-end desktop, or laptop that I want to run a server on, or just fux around, linux is where I head.

When all is said and done:

1) Stop bitching about windows in a windows section.

2) No one cares if you want to stop using windows

3) Make a base for statements

4) Jump off a bridge

Thank you, and have a nice day

People bitch when they change to much and people bitch when they change to little

Yes windows 7 is not as much of a change and most thought like back in the days of Blackcomb however Microsoft is doing something right.

They are fixing what should have been fixed in Vista. A new UI and what not would confuse the hell out of consumers at this point considering some are not switching to Vista yet.

Everyone has an opinion which if fine, however I am really interested to see if people could back up their claims. I am interested in seeing what you would do with Windows 7 at this point instead of bitching, Its the same old crap that we had for Vista

Loving beta 1. Hopefully they'll post a key for me on MSDN soon :) Going to try and install Visual Studio/Office 2007/SQL Server and the like today. If OneCare worked, i'd probably try and use it regularly.

Windows Live Messenger 9 seems to separate the contact list and the display picture into different window handles, which kind of messes up the window peek from the taskbar, since you can't single click the open messenger window to minimize it. Was it this way in previous builds? Hopefully the 7 team will work with the Live team to get this issue sorted out.

I liked Vista and have supported it, but 7 is definitely another step in the right direction.

For the record, Microsoft Fingerprint Reader still isn't recognized as a biometric device. I wonder if drivers have to register themselves in there. Haven't looked at any new DDK docs regarding that, assuming there even are any.

Oh! Also love the new programmer mode in the calculator.

Anyone having the issue where it boots fine with the DVD in the drive after install, every time. but if you take the disc out it shows as DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER.

If I boot to the DVD and try to run a startup repair it shows the OS as installed on D:, and C: seems to be a 200mb partition that setup created with the bootmgr on it. However neither C: or D: have a boot.ini file

And at the Command Prompt from the DVD, FIXBOOT and FIXMBR do not exist... any other ideas? Otherwise works fine with the DVD in the drive.

And no, it's not an issue of boot device priority...

Just did a clean install now. I have to say that doing a clean install is much better. The beta runs faster and a little smoother then doing it as an upgrade.

So far, I am finding this build very well done.

Yes, Should have clarified, I had already setup my Superbar to show text when the Superbar is not full.

In many ways this is Vista 2.0, but to me, everything I've experienced so far is everything I wanted from Windows 7. There are hundreds of minor improvements that the typical Vista user wouldn't notice, but having used Vista for 2 1/2 years now every day, I instantly noticed the massive amounts of changes (this being my first try with Win7).

Now hopefully they offer a good Upgrade for when it RTM's.

Everything that worked for me in Vista works in 7. All my hardware and programs work like they always do. This beta is way more polished than the Vista public beta. I could easily use this for everyday use in it's current state.

So far Windows 7 works pretty good for me. It's very stable for a beta build and so far I didn't experience any weird crashes or anything. It's also nice to see that most of my hardware is recognized out of the box without the need of any additional drivers. It's must be a bit of a clich? but the first thing I really noticed was how much the new taskbar and Mac OS X Dock work (and even look a bit) alike. The way I see it it's a good thing that it's finally possible to drag shortcuts and running applications around.

Hopefully Windows 7 will have a better start than Windows Vista did.
