andir
Evolution? There's no reason why humans don't live in cabes cooking on a campfire apart from that times change and people move on. If I wanted to, I could. There's a very big difference in that. In fact, some people still do cook over a campfire on a regular basis, and people do live in caves. grdh20
Update: This does not provide the classic start menu from Windows 95,98,2000. I tried it. Windows Server 2008 R2 does still have the old start menu I understand. Some third-party app will come out to provide the classic style start menu in Windows 7. I wouldn't mind the new start menu if it had a few tweak options, like not having to use a scroll bar for "All Programs" if your list was too long. I have a 30" monitor and I can only see a handful of entries under all programs without scrolling up. In any case I use and old program called Panekiller which happens to still work on Win7, to invoke a WInXP style start menu in a few different ways so I can have the best of both now. http://www.maddogsw.com/panekiller/ Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/716716-where-is-the-classic-start-menu-in-windows-7/page/8/#findComment-590484200 Share on other sites

However, the option to invoke panekiller instead of the start menu doesn't seem to work for me. Did you have to do anything special to get that to work, or do you just not use that feature? Onyma
Also disappointed about the removal of the start menu here. I service about 700 users in our corporation and about 40% of them prefer the classic start menu style. This will be something to be considered when it comes time to consider migrating to Windows 7. A definite problem. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/716716-where-is-the-classic-start-menu-in-windows-7/page/8/#findComment-590520112 Share on other sites

bbfc_uk
Move away from the past and embrace the future, which is Windows 7! Honestly, the Start Search function has been improved in Windows 7 from Vista and I use it now as a means of launching a program quickly and easily. mickrussom
Well, they are trying really hard to push some of the new features such as Jump Lists and searching from the Start menu itself, both of which would be really awkward to implement with the "classic" Start menu. By removing it, Microsoft also cuts down on overall support calls because everyone using Windows 7 will be using the new Start menu, support agents will not need to guide a customer through different steps dependent on the Start menu style. Lies. They are trying to force a new paradigm of little icons that point to a .exe file or a URL. BFD. This is simple UI fascism, and its ultra annoying. Its the first thing I looked for and its one of the few things there is to complain about. Chris-Gonzales
I too find no "classic" start menu in Windows 7 very annoying.however, does anyone know how to automatically show All Programs by default when opening the start menu. clicking All Programs everytime is so freaking stupid. I wish they would make it the full width of the menu, much like search is now. Uhmmm... did you not notice the following at the top of the page: Compatibility: runs under Windows 95, 98, ME, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows 2000 The software hasn't been updated since 2001, basically, and I seriously doubt it'll ever work with Windows 7 considering all the GUI changes that have been implemented. The old Start Menu is basically gone... when will people get over it and move on... Ambroos
Start menu search! Use Windows as it's meant to be used (which is usually default settings) and after a while you will notice it goes fastest. Microsoft's Research department isn't as lazy as you might think it is. I agree that Instant Search is far superior to the older method of using the Start menu. But, it's hard to change the behavior of those who've been using Windows since the 95 days, a long 14 years ago. Quasar2112
The classic start menu is present in Windows 7. To get to it, though, you have to enter Safe Mode. Why is the classic start menu in Safe Mode but not in "normal mode"? I have no idea. I really don't know.
