275-Pound Woman Says Hospital Told Her to Use Zoo MRI

When a 5-foot, 275-pound woman found out she had a tumor on her spine, she was told by her local hospital to go the zoo to have a MRI because a regular MRI machine could not hold her weight, MyFOXKC.com reported.

Carolyn Ragan told the television station she discovered the tumor two years ago and, after the hospital told her she could not use their MRI machine, a medical assistant said he would help her find a solution.

“So he suggested the Kansas City Zoo,” Ragan said. “I thought, I know I’m big, but I’m not as big as an elephant. And my husband got mad.”

The University of Kansas Hospital would not comment on Ragan’s claim, but said its MRI department does not know of any animal MRI in the Kansas City area that would scan a human.

Ragan’s problem was two-fold: She was too heavy for the table and too wide to slide through the opening.

Medical Imaging in Kansas City North, which has both closed and open MRI machines can typically hold up to 440 pounds, but sometimes a person who weighs less can still be out of luck, according to an MRI technician.

“It depends on how they are built a lot of times and what part of their body we’re scanning,” said technician Sarah Abbott of Medical Imaging. “(The machine) can only be so open before the magnetic field dissipates into the room.”

Ragan, who ended up having two surgeries and some paralysis, said she finally found an open MRI machine that held her weight, but it was embarrassing and frustrating.

“They should have machines that fit most everybody,” she said.

If it's big enough, then it was a valid suggestion.

Her husband could get mad, but maybe she should get dieting!

"How dare they suggest I am huge"... But you're huge!?

Hospital giver reasonable advice.

Her husband gets vex.

In terms of body mass index, she is huge compared to an Elephant.

Anyways who would want to climb on a 5 foot tubby everytime you wanted some 'hows your father'?

The husband should have not allowed his woman to get that huge in the first place.

Well, she will die soon anyway, I wonder if anyone has a spare piano case to bury her in.

That was cold, harsh and downright disrespectful...

Get in ;)

Lmao.

Harsh but true. If she can't use the standard hospital MRI machine then she'd have to use the Zoo one

Go to the zoo and get the MRI done. If they can't fit you into the regular MRI machine, you may want to rethink the way you live your life. A Tumor in most cases will not cause weight gain o nthat scale so its something else she did to begin with, so its entirely her fault she's in that predicament. You're OBESE, do something about it; spend the time you took to go to the news instead to do work out or start a dieting routine.

lol I weight 120kg and I went into a CT scan couple times to scan for my kidneys. No problems there. Plenty of room in the hole. So how big was those scanners they had? Small-sized? haha.

The issue wasn't her size or the size of the MRI machine. It was her weight. I guess they didn't want to risk breaking it.

those machines cost MILLIONS, each one is worth MILLIONS

However the whole usually fits about 90% of body types.....

fitting her would could MILLIONS more, and the machine probably wouldnt do its job as well...........

ohh i'd hate to be the doctor who had to tell her that :(

Whats the problem?? She cant fit in the normal one so she has to find one she can fit in and if its at a zoo then thats where you got to go, or dont have a scan at all. Simple as that.
