Remembering folder views "Fixed" in Windows 7?

Recommended Posts

One of the things I hated about Vista was that folders never seemed to Remember folder views.

Well I have been running Windows 7 for a while now and I have yet to see this issue show its ugly face :)

Has Microsoft confirmed this was fixed in Windows 7 or am I just lucky for not seeing it yet?

edit not fixed!! :(

It's fixed, apart from search folders whereby you have to explicilty go to the folder and view option and apply to all folders. This would mean all search folders will have the same view.

It's not fixed in build 7000 (public beta) but it may be in later builds.

(It's really irritating when it crops up. My Vista installation trashed all my folder views to inappropriate values last night.)

Not fixed in libraries at least.

https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=724166

I should mention that this is in public beta build 7000.

Exactly, not fixed in library.

I had 3 links in my desktop from the library and I was going mental, thinking I had the same Vista bug. So I tried the Vista fix (registry thing) and of course it didn't work. Later I found it's just the library cause normal link to real folder are ok and the OS remember the folder the settings.

So everything seems fine if you don't use the library.

Is Microsoft aware of this bug and are they planning on fixing it before Windows 7 goes Final?

I didn't made a feed for this.

Anyway, I just tried again to be sure of the bug, and yes is definitely here. If you want to replicate:

Go into Document library. If a subfolder inside your document library has a specific view settings - like big thumbnails - it will just be seen with the default view you have for the Doc library. Viceversa, if you set a picture preview setting for a subfolder inside your lib, all the lib turn with this setting.

If it's by design, I don't see the point.

Didn't notice it either this far - I'm not using libraries though, as I have no use for them.

I'm not sure what you guys are talking about. The rare "forgetting folder settings" bug was fixed.

Libraries have a different view model that most people prefer. There are some improvements to the way By Folder works after the beta that are based on user feedback (including people on this forum). In the other Arrange By views changes are remembered for that view. So if you change the By Song view to have different columns, they'll stay that way. The only thing it won't remember is if you change By Album to be stacked by something other than Album, as that would be very confusing and get you into a weird state.

Didn't notice it either this far - I'm not using libraries though, as I have no use for them.

What does that mean? You don't have documents, music, pictures, or videos on your machine?

Not sure if you are talking about the same thing some of us here are.

For example if you go into the "documents folder" and then change the view in one of folders in the "documents folder" then all folders will share the same size icons.

This was not changed fixed?

All other folder views outside of "documents folder" seems to been fixed for the better!

Do you mean the Documents Library? Yes then I believe what you're describing is by design, and something I thought most people here would appreciate. You set your view settings once and they're remembered for all of the Documents Library (including all the sub-locations).

I'm really confused. In one thread people are complaining when Windows doesn't remember their view settings, and in another people are complaining when it does?

I think what people want I know I do at least anyway is to be able to have every folders view saved. So for example one folder I may want Large icons view and another folder I may want details views.

I am glad this is fixed for all folders now in Windows 7.

Except of course the "Documents Library" Folder and sub folders which does not have this feature.

I hope its not to late for Microsoft to fix the Remember folder views issue for the "Documents Library" Folder and sub folders also!

Libraries are this way by design.

all documents library folders/views will use the "document" view you set up for the document library. While the music library will use and remember how you set up your music library view, while the video library, of course, will use a video centric view and remember changes you make to them.

this makes sense, meanwhile while you browse your folders regularly they will remember the folder view settings independently. So if you want to view one document folder differently, navigate it manually outside of the library.

This bug I'd still ongoing! I got it now in vista. You would think it would be officially fixed by now. I go in and out of a folder of pics a few times, 4th time I go in it's turned to details view. Brings my **** to a boil.

It's not fixed because it's difficult to reproduce. If you can figure out a way to cause it to happen intentionally please post it. I'm sure Brandon and the rest of the shell team would love to get rid of this defect. :)

(My Vista "Uninstall Programs" currently thinks it's a video folder. :p)
