can someone tell me if these are the right steps in going about install W7

- use vista's partition tool to create a new partition

- Mount image

- install to newly created partition

let me know if i need to do anything else

That would work fine.

Just in... from a very reliable source. Windows 7 build 7105 is the Release Candidate build. Not just the escrow, but the final RC build. It is set to be released to the public from Microsoft in three days, on April 10th.

The build that just leaked, 7077 is also the RC, because 7105 is just 7077 re branded, for marketing purposes.

As with any rumor, things change. But, this is the current plan with Microsoft. I guess we will have to wait and see...

No, 7105 is NOT RC. It's an RTM branch winmain build.

As far as I know, this is how it works (and I may we way off on this, but just my understanding)

At build 7077, Microsoft branched off the Release Candidate. This does NOT mean 7077 is going to be the release candidate, just that further changes to winmain won't affect the Release Candidate branch. Winmain was then bumped to 7105 to make room for the final Release Candidate (which I have a feeling will be tagged 7100). In between now and the final RC candidate, Microsoft will likely rebuild the RC many times.

If there is a build to be released April 10th (and I am not in a position to confirm or deny that there is) then it would just be an RC-escrow, not the RC build.

@Kevin, the link was to JCXP (but Neowin does some link modifying). In any case the thread has now been locked.
