There are rumors too that a new UI is coming!

I don't think it's going to be an extreme makeover of the Aero theme. New icons all over the place, a bit of new make-up for Aero, perhaps a slightly better looking Basic skin - that's going to be it.

I'd be happy if there was a better looking basic skin. I liked the idea of vista''s basic theme but it just looks like a theme that was never finished. imo

I'd laugh even more if it turned out to be true :p

I would too. But I think we all know that the start menu and orb are NOT going to be removed in RC. To drastic a change.

Zune ? ...hmm... a black-orange UI ?

Not specifically but the simple elements from the design obviously keep colours customizable and stuff. At least if anything for a basic interface it'd look good.

I for one would like to see the option to switch be the new Windows 7 "dock" and the old taskbar style.

I would also love for it to be scalable, much in the way of OSX's dock. Make it as big, or as small as you want!

That would make me happy.

  1. Its already there. Just go to your taskbar settings and chose "small icons" and "never combine"
  2. You could just drag it up

The only problem with dragging the taskbar is that it's more limited. There are only a few, static sizes that can be used. And this is because the icons are limited to a set size of 256?256 pixels, whereas this limit is twice as much in Mac OS X Leopard.

If I am to believe anyone, unless Tom or Brandon come here saying it simply isn't true, I am going with what Paul has to say. He's got more connections at MS and in the business than most here do. I see no reason not to believe him.

+1

Microsoft kept doing minor UI tweaks with XP as well and suddenly dropped in a new UI in RTM.

Not true, Luna was "dropped" pretty early on and I wouldn't call Luna a "new" UI since it was just a skin. The Skin engine has been worked on since the beginning (with Watercolor...which was a way better skin).

Really XP only had very minor modifications to the UI of Windows 2000, many users thought the changes were greater because they were coming from Win98/ME.

People are already having heart attacks over the "huge" taskbar in Windows 7. So how do you think they'd respond to this, with an even larger taskbar?

i didnt mean by this, that they should copy-paste whole gui - just make it more like mentioned above longhorn concept ; p.

anyway, i hope also that "new UI" means some corrections of present UI, and at least colouring folder shellstyle like in Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Messenger

Luna was dropped from the longhorn bulids right when the 4xxx ones begin. Luna was still in the early 3xxx alpha bulids

+1, but not that washed out, darker hues is a must.

...Whereas no one ****ing needs that big of icons.

I have no idea if this rumor is true but I think that from a business point of view windows7 would benefit immensely from a new ui/theme.

As long as it's not IMPOSED as default and is available as a theme choice, yes.
