+unabatedshagie Subscriber¹ Posted June 22, 2004 Subscriber¹ Share Posted June 22, 2004 I use aveicon, you can get it from here. Freeware, converts either ico to png or png to ico, all you do is drag the ico's into the program and drag the png's out. It can do hundereds at a time (I've done 606). samxt
 I realize my comment is a little to little to late but I'll post it anyway. I've tried a few icon programs and ended up buying Axialis' Icon Workshop after trying it because of how easily it automatically creates win XP Icon sets from a single image in the blink of an eye. I edit in photoshop cs in 128x128 usually, or greater png format then export to Icon workshop via filter and create XP icon set and save as ico. The best way to created the highest quality icons period. Icon workshop cost a bit, but if you like to make quality icons, it's worth the money ten times over, and the program was superbly designed. The best way to created the highest quality icons period. Icon workshop cost a bit, but if you like to make quality icons, it's worth the money ten times over, and the program was superbly designed. While I agree that Iconworkshop is an excellent piece of software that makes icon conversion a breeze (I use it myself), I'm not sure if it would be correct to say that it produces the "highest quality icons period". In my opinion, if you want your icons to be of the highest quality, the best method would be an old one (before such icon conversion programs came about). This consists in creating each size format (128x128, 96x96, etc) in Photoshop, saving them in PSD format and then compiling them together as an ICO file in Gif Movie Gear. This way, you are sure that the image in each of the size formats are of excellent quality (no jagged edges, sharp images even at the lowest size format, so forth). Of course, this method is rather tedious. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/77026-how-to-convert-png-to-ico/page/3/#findComment-584649246 Share on other sites
Rupert
On a low budget, I strongly recommend Snico Edit. It does everything I need. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/77026-how-to-convert-png-to-ico/page/3/#findComment-584652187 Share on other sites
samxt
 To the contrary, Photoshop combined with my skill level produces the quality images, Axialis Icon workshop resizes them with the best quality.... comparable to Photoshop, and much easier. I ditched GIF moviegear for icons 2 years ago and never looked back! Here's are a couple of examples. Load either of the 128x128 images into Icon workshop and see for yourself! Very minimal jaggies far less than any other method. If you start with a high quality image with no jaggies, then you'll end up with high quality icons at the lower end in the resize process of Icon workshop with very little jaggies. If you like a little sharper image, erase some of the transparency on the edges. Try it for yourself. The search image is a search icon I made from scratch. Although there is nothing significant about it, and I agree that it still needs some reflective light shading on the lens, and it is slightly blurred (my preference), it is of top quality. Open it in Photoshop and use the plugin to transfer to Icon workshop (IW), or just open the image in IW and create a new XP icon set and you'll see what i mean. Then try to recreate the icons in your own way separately and see if the results are better. I would venture to guess that they aren't, and with much more time consumed. I made the mail icon from an image I took of a bill I forgot to send as another example. I run 1600x1200 desktop at present with 56x56 icon sizes and these look fantastic on the start menu or task bar Quicklaunch with large icons nenabled. Small icons look great too. 128x128 32x32 128x128 32x32 Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/77026-how-to-convert-png-to-ico/page/3/#findComment-584669779 Share on other sites

samxt
how can i use larger icons for folders? windows just resizes them. 585386368 I don't think you can, unless you choose to use thumbnail view in your explorer windows. I could be wrong, but I'm sure that thumbnail view will show the same size as what your desktop icons are being displayed at. I personally don't know of any other way to display larger icon sizes for folders in explorer. galoosh33
I've tried like 100 different links and software, none worked well. Irfanview and Xnview are no good, they don't support alpha channels. That Icon Sushi app just showed me error messages, and so on with all other links posted in this thread. I found this great program called Aveicon just drag and drop .... And various different size settings ;) http://www.aqua-soft.org/board/showthread.php?t=15304 585459411 But this worked.
