actually, i loved the mighty mouse. really, the design was amazing, i loved how it felt in my hand, the trackball was a good idea (i am aware that there were trackball-mice before but the trackball has, at least as far my knowledge goes, never been this small) and the squeeze-"feature" really caught me.

however, i gave up using it 24/7 when i was fed up with cleaning the freaking trackball every 2 - 3 months. its not that i have filthy hands, i have a problem with obsessional washing, however, it just kept becoming useless.

now it just sits next to my macbook while i it to point and the trackpad to scroll. works out pretty well for me but that is not what i actually want.

So I went and rehooked the mouse back up to the Mac, just couldn't handle the mouse I was using as well or nicely. My fiance' used the Mac for the first time in a while last night and said "Ummm...the mouse scrolls up, but not down." I told her that I was aware of that and was looking into a solution. I am tempted to drive it to the Apple Retailer to see if they would do a replacement, but not likely as they are not a true Apple store, rather the one and only in the lower part of my state that supplies Apple stuff locally. Is a pity too, because if I want something asap Apple related, have to buy through them at an inflated price. Otherwise, I will order online.

I did manage to fix some of the downward scrolling by taking one of the brushes that I got with my electric razor, and it brushed underneath the ball some with the longer bristles, it fixed some of it, but still a bit touch and go. Needs some more work on it. I just wish that whoever builds those trackballs could come up with a design to prevent said contamination. A lot of devices that have it already like the Mighty Mouse, and Blackberry phones all suffer form some sort of issue related to that ball.

The Mighty Mouse might as well be called the "Crap Mouse." I don't know why Apple refuses to fix the stupid scroll ball. It's clearly a design flaw, considering nearly every other mouse on the planet works fine even with "greasy, sweaty hands." If the scroll ball is getting dirty because dirt and debris slows it down, then it's quite obvious it needs to be redesigned so it's a) easily cleanable (you have to void your warranty and take the mouse apart to clean it) or b) put the scroll ball somewhere else so debris can't ruin it.

An optical sensor on top of the mouse would work. It could read your finger patterns as you move over it and work like an inverted optical mouse.

I think the matter is it costs more to issue a recall or fix them than it does to ignore it. The amount of people that actually complain about is probably not very high. Considering how long its been around I expect a revision should be around the corner that will likely address this issue. I'm guessing they don't want to bother fixing this one and just phase it out completely with a newer one. Hopefully sooner than later.
