Denis W. Veteran Posted May 31, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 31, 2009 My USB headset uses the CM-108 chip. The 32-bit Vista drivers work just fine in Windows 7, although its mixer inside its own custom control panel is non-functional. For 64-bit, the drivers do install and sound does come out, but the system grinds to a terrible halt if you attempt to load the control panel. It'll take roughly two minutes before the control panel shows up. I thought it was just this chip with the problem, but someone else experiences the same problem on Win7 x64 with another sound card using another C-Media chip. If you can or cannot successfully load the control panel and you use an audio device that uses a C-Media chip, and you're also running Windows 7 x64, please post here. For the record, this is another one of those dumb issues that prevent me from moving to 64-bit builds.

jimbo11883
No problems here on Windows 7 RC1 x64, AuzenTech X-Meridian. I did experience this problem on earlier Windows 7 builds.
svnO.o
I'll have to check this out later. I just very recently bought a AudioFX Pro 5+1 Force Feedback headset which has the CM-108 chipset. I'm currently running Vista x64 and haven't checked to see how they work in Win7 RC1 x64 yet.

Please do. :) For the record, my headset's a Steelseries 3H USB. The drivers offered by Steelseries dates from December 11 of last year, and CM10864.sys in the driver package is version 6.12.8.2012. edit: I downloaded drivers for your headset, and it looks like it uses 5.12.8.1802. protocol7
My Xonar D2 uses the same CMI8788 as jimbo's X-Meridian and I've no hassle with the control panel (though it's Asus's heavily modded/skinned version) in 7100 x64.
Denis W. Veteran Posted May 31, 2009 Author Veteran Share Posted May 31, 2009 Here's a screenshot of the control panel. It incorrectly thinks this is XP; the Vista control panel looks slightly different.

Yup, here's the page to keep checking. 8788 chipset users like Xonar, X-Meridian and Claro can use the 8787 drivers posted there.

svnO.o
Alright so I'm in Windows 7 now. It shows up properly for me. I did have to install the software for my headset using Vista SP2 compatibility mode (said it didn't recognize version 7 or something). The panel shows up fine, just the info tab is delayed by like 2 seconds compared to the other tabs. After closing it for the first time, Windows asked me if it loaded properly or something and I just clicked yes. Anyway, I attached some screenshots. I'll take your word for it and keep checking that site for new 8787 drivers for Windows 7, considering I doubt AuzenTech will do much with this card. Too bad, it's an awesome card. protocol7
It's not Auzentech's fault. They're waiting on C-Media. I'm not sure if they ever modified the drivers in any way or just repackaged the reference ones. C-Media eventually gave Asus the exclusive rights to the 8788 (including it's driver development). That's why the X-Meridian was discontinued, because the supply of chips dried up. I guess C-Media belatedly saw the error of their ways (and probably Asus' half-assed driver development) and released these 8787 drivers. If you look in the inf files the X-Meridian and Claro are listed. But in the meantime, the Vista drivers work fine (here at least).
Denis W. Veteran Posted June 2, 2009 Author Veteran Share Posted June 2, 2009 (edited) I'm almost certain it's the fault of the drivers. If I use this on my PC with a 32-bit copy of Windows 7 RC, it works. It doesn't work in Windows 7 x64 while installed as a regular OS. Now after installing Windows 7 x64 in a virtual machine and attempting to open the control panel inside the VM... it also locks up. The freeze is only 30 seconds, but still a noticeable freeze nevertheless. There also appears to be a HUGE memory leak. The VM idles at around 220 MB RAM usage, but jumps up to 660+ MB when the Control Panel's open. Screenshot in a bit. pastieman69
Sorry to bump this post, but did anyone ever find a solution to this problem with the C-media drivers causing memory bleed with Steel series USB headsets? I'm running RTM X64, and having the same problem on an X48 mobo, with a pair of 5H V2's. They work fine with every other chipset I have with RC and RTM, so I wondered if anyone else who had the problem was using the same chipset? Thanks Pastieman
Denis W. Veteran Posted September 30, 2009 Author Veteran Share Posted September 30, 2009 It was actually fixed a long time ago, back in June. :p They issued beta drivers over here: http://www.steelseries.com/downloads/Drive...r_2.21_beta.zip These work just fine on Win7 x64. (Just remember to run the installer as Vista SP2 compat mode.)
